I from all these posts I'm coming to terms with the fact that the people on the shows have already closed on their properties, but how does it work when HGTV gets footage of them in their previous homes and the houses that they end up choosing (have already closed on) are empty when the walk through it?

Candidates for these shows have to be under contract but not necessarily have closed on the property. Or they can have closed, but not moved. If possible, the show tries to target two other homes that the buyers did consider, but not always. So, they do get the footage of the buyers home before the move and of the home being bought before the closing. Google "House Hunters Behind the Scenes" and you'll find a number of web-sites that have some details from people who have been on the show about what goes on. And HGTV has not been hiding this. In fact, they did an interview for an article (November 2008: http://voices.yahoo.com/the-top-five-hgtv-shows-2138300.html) about the show some time back and told about the process themselves.

I always wonder on Property Brothers whether people actually know which show they are on beforehand. They always seem so angry about the dream home they can't afford.

You should browse the Television Without Pity forums. The "contractor" brother is apparently a magician, and one or both were underwear models. I don't think I can believe anything I see on HGTV anymore.

Yes, the contractor brother is a magician. He also is a licensed contractor and has built houses. So what? Both have admitted in interviews that they were working in the entertainment business and sold real estate and did contracting work while trying to "make it" in the entertainment business. How many actors/entertainers do you know that DIDN'T do other work on the way up? But, they are both legit with their real estate licenses and the one with the contracting license. I've known very few people in the entertainment industry who didn't have multiple jobs before landing a significant gig.

And many of the contractors and builders on these home improvement shows have worked in the entertainment industry. For example, check out the web-site for Greg Plitt, who has been one of the contractors on Designed to Sell. Check out the background of Carter Oosterhouse of Red Hot and Green and Carter Can. And that one carpenter on Rate My Space.

Mike Aubrey has screwed over all of his old friends and even his wife. This guy is a monster. Don't buy the BS he is selling.

Ditto. I told my husband we should buy a nice house in Houston for $300k and he said but then we'd have to live in Houston. LOL.

Wow... it all makes sense now. That why they always agree on a property too!
