My dad's favorite Sunday morning breakfast involved omelettes with the week's leftovers. Hands down, the fried chicken with chili omelette was the absolute worst.
He was old school, and you never wasted food. Grew up during the depression. My mom? She was of the school where you leave at least something on your plate lest you look needy. New England debuntante met a Navy guy. Imagine how fun this was! |
Yes, considering I'd throw up from the milk, pretty mean. Bet the two of you have a lot in common. |
Oh get over yourself. |
How old are your kids? |
Well, in my house (growing up as a child, NOT my house now with my kids) it started out with "You'll sit there until you've eaten every bite" type comments...if that didn't work it would sometimes escalate to squeezing the kids face/cheeks/mouth open with one hand and trying to cram food in with the other...if kid spits food out he gets a smack in the face...if it still didn't work the belt came out. Fun times.

| As a young kid in the 90s my dad would make us boxed mac n cheese with frozen mixed veggies and canned tuna mixed in. Very poor, mom was gone, and he wanted to get in all the food groups. I actually still like that mixture. A couple times my mom tried to make Thai noodles by mixing peanut butter and honey in with regular spaghetti noodles. Gag! I was also made to sit until finished dinner or eat it cold for breakfast the next morning. |
My mom also made your dad's mixture. I think it's yummy to this day. The "Thai noodles," on the other hand, sound gross. |

My mom is a good cook so I don't remember too many food issues. I did abruptly switch from loving to hating spinach though, and I remember staring down a few plates of it before the switch was accepted.
She did do a throw an egg over leftovers meal periodically which I never liked. She still likes that, I still don't. |

Spam and baked beans. But that was usually when we were really low on groceries.
I can also remember some major food showdowns that involved runny fried eggs and oatmeal. I hated both, so I'd sit at the table for hours until I had to gag them down cold. |
My mom never forced me to eat anything, but since it was just her and me, she catered to my tastes and what she could get done quickly. There was a lot of boxed kraft mac & cheese (sometimes with canned tuna), canned vegetables, mashed potatoes, frozen pizza, and frozen kids meal dinners. Her fanciest meals were meatloaf and mac & cheese from scratch - of course made with velveeta. There were lots of microwaved grilled cheese sandwiches and hotdogs, too. We never had seafood, salad, or fresh vegetables, and I don't remember any fresh fruit. Then again, she was on a tight budget and tight time schedule as a single mom. Oh, one of our favorite things was either canned campbells chicken and noodle soup or tomato soup with microwaved popcorn mixed in . Good times! Would never feed half of that crap to DC.

liver and onions
cod liver oil millet corn meal oatmeal |
Yes! Don't forget the crunchy noodles! This was a treat at our house growing up. Now as someone who has lived in China, I don't think I could eat this again without cracking up. I loved most of my mom's cooking except for her salmon cakes. Salmon out of a can. Really? |
| Another vote for liver and onions! Ugh, I can still smell it. Anytime my Dad cooked we got something that was full of garlic and burned. We had to smile and pretend we loved it because he had an awful temper and would yell and berate us if we didn't. Good times. |
| Why is liver and onions? Probably hotdogs contain liver. |
Beef liver with gravy.....used to make me gag. Had to eat it anyway. |
