Potted meat

| Soft boiled eggs for breakfast every morning and every morning it would take me an hour to finish. She finally gave up on the soft boiled eggs and moved onto scrambled eggs made in a double boiler which were as bad. |
| Some of these are hilarious (and sad, and gross). I always thought my mom's standard --- skinless, boneless, unseasoned chicken breast broiled until extremely well done, served with frozen corn and peas -- was nasty. But it's nothing compared to what most of the PPs posted. Of course, I am still not a big chicken fan ... and I don't like much anything without some sort of seasoning or sauce. Oh well. Mom was actually a very good cook, as witnessed by her holiday meals, but she hated it so didn't really exert herself of the rest of the time. Now I am wondering whether my kids will hate the foods I love. |
| Tuna fish gravy over mashed potatoes. Basically, a can of tuna with a flour and water "gravy" over boiled potatoes mashed with water (not milk). No butter. No salt. |
|
Spaghetti omelets with salsa. Ham steaks.
Some of the other things mentioned on here (beets, soft boiled eggs, canned salmon, prunes) I actually like a lot. |
|
My mom tried to "hide" ground liver in chili. Eeesh. They pushed a lot of liver back in the day b/c they thought it was healthy.
Once she made this groat "casserole" so to speak that I hid instead of eating. I was four. A friend over to play found the green fuzzy version of it a few days later, and I got in trouble. |
| gosh times have changed. I can't imagine anyone I know forcing their kids to sit at a table for hours on end in front of a unfinished plate. |
| just about everything she cooked. I mastered the art of discreetly swallowing disgusting food with milk. luckily she turned over cooking duties to us children when we were teenagers. |
|
campbells chicken noodle soup
chitlins black eyed peas bbq'ed Racoon ick |
| Tuna fish mushed to a pulp in the cuisinart with raw onions. She wouldn't squeeze all the water out of the can. Plop that tuna fish on some old wheat bread, and make me take to school in my brown paper sack. No cold pack, no refrigerator, so it would sit out all morning until lunch time. Gross soggy bread and warm tuna. Yum. |
|
Hamburger gravy on toast. *dry heave*
That and Lima beans. Both make me gag even today. |
Well parents are soft these days. |
| Whole chicken livers. |
| I actually liked/still like my mom's liver and onions but I hate her grits. We always had grits with breakfast which would not have been bad but they were always thick and lumpy, I would gag. Me/my brother tried hiding them in the fruit bowl once. Let's just say......it did not end well when she found our surprise. To this day I cant eat grits. She also had a special way with steak. She would cook it until it was like an old leather belt. We would dump ketchup on it just so it wouldnt be so dry. Didnt help it at all. |
| grape juice with a raw egg in it, supposed to make us "healthier". |
