Didn't end up using it because a close friend's late mother's maiden name was Bishop and I suspected she might want to use it if she has a second son. I'm not sure if she is thinking of using it as a middle or first name, but I think it sounds nice either way. Although, I am not Catholic so I don't have the "religious title" association at all. To me it is just a surname being used as a first or middle name.

At the end of the day, everyone is going to have some association with the name you choose, and unless it is their own kid's name odds are the association is either negative or goofy or undignified (e.g., I knew a ______ in high school and he was a jerk, my cousin's dog's name is _______, _________ was a character in [book, movie or tv show you've never read/seen]). Unless the name is overtly sexual or scatological, or infamous like Adolf or Saddam or Osama, you shouldn't worry about other people's associations. Go with what you like and what has positive associations for you -- no one else (besides your DH and the child himself) is going to have to live with the name every day.

I dunno if I go along w/ this logic. I'm not Jewish, but I wouldn't name a child "Rabbi," because I know that to MANY people, the name is a religious title.

Is Rabbi and Bishop really comparable tho? Nope. So this is a goofy thought.

why are they not comparable? they are both titles related to different religions.

Know many people with the last name "Rabbi"? Nope

When I was a kid I told my mom I wanted to name my child Conan after the book series I was engrossed in. She still reminds me after having two boys with decidedly classic and noncontroversial names. Go for it!

Terrible name. I hope you didn't do it, OP!

I'm a child of the 80's and it makes me think of the movie Aliens. You could name it Newt if it's a girl.

I don't think kids are accepting of names at all. Kids (especially older ones) are actually pretty mean to each other and I'd be worried that little Bishop would be the target for a lot of bullying and swirlies in the future. Just my 2 cents.

You must have been bullied for an obvious inability to think.

Not little kids, but middle school and higher.

yea I got that, tips...what for? What's their angle this name brings over another name?

For a religious title? Are people still religious in2012? Kids in 10+ years from now are going to care less about that shit than they do now.

If I were going to give my child an occupational name (and I really don't like occupational names -- no Pipers or Harpers for me), I'd probably just cut to the chase and go with "Doctor" or "Lawyer." At least a child called "Doctor" might get a plane held at the gate, whereas someone named Bishop might be expected to take confession at all the wrong moments.

I'm getting a chuckle out of the comments because my youngest son's name is, in fact, Bishop. I was careful not to choose a middle name like John or Michael that would sound overly Catholic. We get varying reactions - some people love the name, some don't. Interestingly, old people seem to really like it - lol!

I wasn't sold on the name when we chose it, but I love that it is a name that is familiar but not at all common. There won't be any other Bishops in his class, yet people know how to pronounce his name and how to spell it. And, though I may be biased, I think my Bishop totally pulls off his name.

It was my husband's pick and since we couldn't agree on a name, I let him choose. And yes, my husband did come across the name via the X-Men comics. I prefer to say his name was "inspired by" as opposed to "name after."

I don't like it. It makes me think of a black child named by a white person. But hey if people can name their kids Connor and Barron, then why not Bishop.

I just laughed hard enough to wake up my baby. Bishop! Ha!
