No, he's definitely wrong: "he gave me this long talk about how I did not look nice in Thanksgiving and his family said bad things about me to him. He told me I need to “look pretty@ for the picnic and that he would take me shopping to get a new outfit for it. "

He could have quietly explained that his family dresses up without saying all of that. Even if she was wearing ripped jeans and a t shirt, she doesn't deserve a long talk about how the family was talking bad about her, and it sounds like the criticism was about her looks in general.
