JLG vs McDuffie on public schools

I am actually worried that she is going to undermine charters somehow. I've never heard her say a positive word about them, while mcDuffie says charters need to be funded the same as DCPS because half the students attend charters. He clearly has no animosity towards charters but I think JLG actually does.

THIS worries me.

At this point in life I'm essentially a one-issue voter (in DC races), and that issue is education.

Second: how crappy our DCDPR parks and rec offerings are, but that's a distant second.

Since we're ranked choice voting: I'm happy to be convinced to list someone else as my top choice beside JLG (and I won't vote McDuffie on principle; longtime Ward 5-er here). Who do you suggest?

So you hate teachers then?

NP. I hate the WTU. I think they are crooked. They are a detriment to our kids' education. I also love teachers.

If you can't differentiate between teachers and the WTU then...you probably collect a paycheck from the WTU.

Teachers are the WTU. So yes you hate teachers.

The self delusion of some people is really astonishing. To claim you don’t hate teachers but hate the WTU is not only wild, but completely divorced from reality. WTU represents 90-95% of DCPS teachers, so if said person is claiming they hate WTU, they definitely hate public school teachers at the very least.

This 100 percent. When posters say they hate the union, they mean they want the right to treat teachers like their servants, hover over them like the Gestapo, interfere with their ability to do their jobs, judge them for being successful or failing at what they do notwithstanding that they themselves are no more qualified to judge then vice-versa, and fire them at will. They want the right to be adverse to teachers and not to work in tandem with that. And that means they hate teachers, and that the WTU is necessary to protect teachers from their haters.

Sorry, but Covid exposed a lot of teacher's unions - including WTU - for what they really are. This is all a lot of BS. And I support unions in general.

I don't think you have to agree with her or with him on specific topics, but I'd much rather go with an engaged mayor on education than one who is not.

Engaged on basically anything… and I totally agree. Anyone who votes for McDuffie and then is surprised that he had literally no principles or interest in engaging anyone except special interest groups and corporations with $$$ deserves what they get.

So true. When they see him slash funding or give a position to his cousin (look it up) they should not be surprised.

Agree McDuffie is corrupt and if he becomes mayor we will see stuff like this.

But I also think if we elect JLG, we'll see her opposing common sense solutions on crime and education in the name of equity, and gaslighting residents who point out there is nothing "equitable" about being afraid or watching your child's school fail them.

That's why the choice is terrible.

Yes, this choice is depressing. PLEASE let's vote for one of the other candidates????

Oh please. The teacher's union exists to protect teachers, not students, and teachers didn't want to die. It's not that complicated.

I'll be ranking Gary Goodweather first - hoping it will at least send a message about what parents want in terms of education. Undecided about how to rank after that, for all the reasons above...

I'm not saying that their fear was justified. Not in hindsight, at least. But lots of people lost their minds in the once-in-100-years pandemic. My real point was that the teachers' union looks out for teachers, not students, and that shouldn't be a surprise to you.

Anthony Williams threw his support behind Kenyan. So that is somewhat meaningful.

I'm also going to rank Goodweather first. He's not as polished as the councilmembers, but his ideas are good.

Oh stop. Literally everything in the entire country was open at the time. Every doctor said a million times that kids needed to be in school. WTU didn't care. They just didn't want to have to work.

And since then, DCPS's truancy rate and chronic absenteeism has been insane -- 40% overall and 90% at some schools. And we see those teens nihilistically create chaos. If the WTU is still defending that stance they have lost my respect completely.
