SD’s graduation issue turning into something bigger.

I think Buy Nothing could produce a cal and gown in two minutes.

Are you sure there’s no neighborhood list serve that you could post on to see if someone has an old cap and gown you could borrow? Is there no way to order a look-alike online? Is there something special about them or are they pretty standard? What colors are they? Your stepdaughter is nuts if she doesn’t graduate, regardless of whether she is able to participate in the ceremony.

Things like this are really important to her. Since finding this out, she’s saying she just won’t finish what she still needs to graduate. Instead, she says she’ll enroll again next spring so she can participate in commencement.

Now she’s also saying she may enroll in a different school entirely because they have a different graduation ceremony — better theme, etc. She says she doesn’t even like the location of her current school’s graduation anyway, or the fact that it’s on a Tuesday, or the time of day, and she doesn’t like the gown pattern either. She says the whole thing wouldn’t make her feel good or in the mood of graduation, or feel excited about dressing up, so she wouldn’t put any effort into it, so she’d rather wait and do it somewhere else, even if she gets a cap and gown for her current schools.

I understand being disappointed, but purposely delaying graduation over not being able to walk, and other ceremonial issues feels completely irrational to me. Has anyone dealt with a teen getting this fixated on the symbolic/social side of graduation?

We’ve contacted her counselor, and we’re waiting to hear back on whether they have a cap and gown in her size or not. Her counselor didn’t seem very optimistic, and I’m so worried.

This can’t possibly be true.

OP, my husband is present, but when she usually has an issue, she comes to her mom or I first. Whether it’s about school, or doing this, or going there, etc. Her mom is aware of this and all things, but due to her living out of state, she can’t help as much, so both parents rely on me. Thats our family dynamics, all blended families are different.

Are you new to the US? The cap and gown are rented for the day/morning. You don't buy them.

This is the same troll who said their DD wouldn’t go to a cousin’s graduation ceremony because she didn’t like the color theme. Same exact writing style. Even the graduation aspect is a repeat.

Do not engage. It hurt encourages this nonsense.

Some buy, some rent.

This is your step daughter, not your problem.
Let her do what she likes

OP, The counselor replied and said they’ll be getting more cap-and-gown inventory in today, and they expect her size to be available.

Nice
She shouldn’t have made such a big drama issue about this.
I was going to suggest buying a sowing machine and some cloth and making her sew her own gown

This was going to be my suggestion. See if there is a FB parent group, group me/ what's app group for parents and ask if there are any recent grads (maybe someone has a sibling who graduated lately) who could lend you their cap and gown.
