Colby made it free to apply and sends endless marketing emails to kids who have no chance of getting it. Maybe Midd should do the same!

Last year was 14%.

Oh great news! So it was easier to get in this year? I was getting worried hearing that top school admission rates were all going down - ivy plus, new ivy etc.

So Midd's acceptance rate went from 14% (2025) to 17% (2026)? Do we know if it was driven by fewer people applying ED binding to Midd, or just lower number of overall applications?

They've lowered the number accepted ED. Last year was 519, this year is 491. They greatly increased the number accepted ED during COVID. Perhaps they're starting to bring that number back down?

yes I think it's better they bring that number down. they still have a way to go as it seems like with even 491, that's a huge percentage of the class: 77% of the Fall starts this year were accepted ED, and 65% of the overall class (including the late-start "Febs", which usually aren't included in official numbers).

I think that's still pretty high - 65% or 77% of the class filled by ED.

The Febs are not included in official numbers?

Not everyone wants the same thing. What a revelation!

And yet, we can probably infer from the 17% yield rate what people want, usually!

It’s almost like you didn’t make a point

That's a yield rate for RD after all the ones who applied and accepted ED, meaning Midd was their #1 choice.

but Colby isn't in Portland

Colby has no app fee and has been gaming their numbers for years.

Don't read into this too much, it's just like Northeastern.

no when GPA/SAT stats are released. No school include spring entrants….

February kids DO NOT HAVE the same stats….They are not even included in the stat that are reported…..It has been like this for 50 years….

Depends. Not all the professors at the two are equal. Kids want different things.

I liked that Midd was close to skiing. Colby is closer to fantastic restaurants. BTV dining options are fine but Portland is way better. Portland is a slightly bigger city than BTV.

Colby is just over an hour away from Sugarloaf / much better skiing than the snow bowl!

Clearly you don't know Northeast ski resorts very well. Midd is just as close to both Sugarbush and Killington, AND Midd has their own ski area just 20 min away.

You can't seriously think Colby is better for a skier? Please.

USC is doing this exact same thing to make up some of their budged deficit so maybe that's what Middlebury is trying too?

They do it to fill the beds for the kids who study abroad. Febs are a long and honored tradition at Middlebury.

That’s not actually the reason bc there are about equal numbers of study abroad kids in the fall as spring.

Weird that you posted on a thread about a school that you’ve never heard of.

It's a good litmus test of your level of education and sophistication.

Are you also taking into account the kids who are graduating in Feb, opening beds?

This whole “Feb” thing isn’t going to happen. It’s just the Northeastern strategy that Middlebury has kept around longer than needed because of their poor financial situation. They want to maximize the amount of families they’re squeezing tuition out of.
