LAC leadership

As far as applications the trend is upwards for HC and recently down for Midd and Colgate. Holy Cross coasted for several years but their new President and admissions teams are hitting homeruns. Kids like sports and things to do culturally on weekends with Boston 1 hour away and Worcester’s rebirth. Sure beats going 15 miles to the Walmart which is a big problem for Hamilton, Colgate, Midd, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, and Bucknell. HC mops the floor with Div 3 NESCAC in football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse and baseball. Tennis team recently beat Trinity but HC men’s rowing is consistently top 25. NESCACs would best HC in fencing, squash, and water polo. It’s endowment per student would be below Colby and Midd but Holy Crosd is beginning a large Capital Campaign. Williams, Amherst, and Bowdoin have the cache and $3-4 billion endowment to fight off rural locations. The rest of the NESCACs don’t. Kids want to be near civilization and HC is only Top LAC close to Boston not named Wellesley College. Holy Cross women basketball plays Michigan on ESPN this week snd baseball made it in NCAAs last spring it’s football team plays at Northwestern and Navy and lastly it is the oldest non Ivy rival over 130 years with Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown. The Crusaders are moving in the right direction but yes not Williams/Amherst.

Now I'm just embarrassed for Holy Cross.

Look, it's a decent regional school. The people I know who went there are smart and did well, but they were all white Irish Catholics from the Northeast, mostly Boston. I don't think it would have wide appeal outside of that demographic. It didn't for my kid.

To mention it in same paragraph as Ivies, Wellesley, Midd, etc. Well you can see the insecurity loud and clear!

HC has always been more prestigious than BC maybe not as popular but definitely more cache among well to do Catholics. No interest in Wesleyan guess it’s better than Trinity.

Only half right. HC has long Irish tradition but drew from all over the country since its founding over 150’years ago. Sounds like the Demographics of BC which until 30 years ago was metro Boston. By contrast Midd drew from Northeast Wasps not a growing demographic.

Those dumping on Davidson are idiots. That said all of the schools that you mentioned are excellent schools and anyone dumping on them is also an idiot.

You know not all schools appeal to all kids, right? So all the kids who didn't feel Davidson was a fit for them are idiots?

This attitude really doesn't make Davidson any more appealing, makes me glad my kid moved on.

Sure Karen

I didn't put up with their passive aggressive nonsense but in your case I'll just point it out and then ignore you.

PS I have no affiliation with Davidson, just an aversion to idiots.

THIS - you’re making Holy Cross look desperate. It’s a fine school but will never compete with most of the NESCACS nor BC, GT, or ND.

Really? Well I think the admissions data would beg to differ. Less than 10K apps for a class of 800+ students? And yes, I think the point I was trying to make is that setting aside athletes, a Wes or Midd or Hamilton or Bowdoin student would likely get into HC, but maybe not the other way around. But they wouldn’t have interest in that either.

Speaking of admissions data Wellesley had 8500 apps for a class of about 600 women. Does anyone think Midd or Wesleyan is better than Wellesley-not even close.

HC is Colby level with better outcomes.

Holy Cross was smart to hire a non-Jesuit and they have momentum. HC is in the quiet phase of capital campaign imagine it will be north of a $billion. Colgate is struggling with applications down 3,000 last cycle and freezing cold remote upstate NY is a negstive. Shocked about Davidson’s restrctive religion Presbyterian litmus test.

Colgate’s applications were down from an all time high so I don’t think that’s worrisome. Brian Casey is doing an amazing job there and their previous presidents were nothing special.

I’m convinced this poster is purposefully trying to make Holy Cross look bad. So much nonsense.

Ok maybe HC has cache amongst a certain subset of Catholics but that is a very niche group. Disagree that HC is more prestigious than BC. It's just not.

I’ve also been impressed with interviews I’ve heard with Roth from Wesleyan.

Ha! Alison Byerly was my thesis advisor when I was a student at Middlebury many moons ago. I didn’t realize she’s now president of Carleton. I always liked her!

Tough to make Holy Cross look bad. Its actually a very good school.

Yeah cuz who wants to be part of a golf club in Georgia with a recent history of racism and sexism?

HC's inclusion in this club is not the positive PP thinks it is.

Ask any BC grad over 30 and they will freely admit HC is more prestigious but maybe not as popular. Know several non-Catholic families whose kids applied there and didn’t realize it was a Catholic school.
