(Seemingly random) stabbing in Alexandria - why was this man not in jail?

Meanwhile, the county keeps increasing taxes. The fun of a deep blue county.

New info. Apparently the police warned the prosecutor’s office that the man who did this was likely to hurt or kill someone if they let him out again.

CA = Commonwealth Attorney, not California.

It is Alexandria. I used to live where the stabbing occurred.

It can be confusing if you're not familiar with the area.

There is the City of Alexandria (its own government) and the surrounding Alexandria section of Fairfax County (Fairfax County government).

The stabbing happened in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County.

DP. I usually say unincorporated Alexandria to help people understand.

Long story short: earlier this week, there was a (seemingly) random murder of a woman waiting for the bus. The person of interest (who is now in custody) has a rap sheet a mile long and has been charged with malicious wounding (at least four times); rape (which was not prosecuted); and numerous other offenses like drunk in public, trespassing, and larceny. Why in the world was this person not in jail? I don't mean for this to be a political post but I'm appalled this sort of person is allowed to walk amongst us. And very sorry it may have cost this woman her life.

Go to the courthouses where he was charged and look up the records. There are lots of reasons why cases don't get prosecuted, often because the original victim or witnesses can't be found or don't want to testify. And we don't lock up people for life for public intoxication (which in a lot of places is not a crime, only public consumption is)m trespassing, or larceny. And 3 strikes laws turn out to be a bad idea.

I looked up his name, and cases were in fact dropped due to lack of witness or victim testimony. The article says there was no record of contact attempts and no subpoenas were issued, which then becomes a question of how the office and/or law enforcement are prioritizing cases, staying on top of workloads, etc. We live in a world were rape kits sit without being processed for years, so. . .

In this case, the police specifically told Descano’s office that this man was violent and escalating, and it was only a matter of time before he hurt someone or worse. Descano’s office chose not to prosecute him for previous crimes, nor help get him deported as he is here illegally.

And this is one of multiple cases where Descano’s office has declined to prosecute violent offenders. This isn’t a one-off, it’s a pattern.
