We won’t lose power this go round either because I invested in a generator last year lol.

Just a suggestion for OP on how to make it through.

Ha ha. Or walk to a store

Why not? Roads will be fine by Monday.

I bet the roads will be very icy on Monday

I have been here since 1991. The Derecho caused a three day outage in neighborhood. I don't recall any long outages during the various winter storms that basically ended life as we know it in the area.

January 1999, right around the 15th there was an ice storm that knocked out power in our neighborhood in Bethesda for days. I remember it well because I had to hand-write my college application essay as I couldn't print it out and then I walked several miles in the snow/ice to the post office to mail it as my parents wouldn't drive on the icy roads.

I think I saw my cat eyeing me last night.

He's going to have an accident, PP. Best to rest and miss the second week as well, honestly. His life is more important. My kid came home last weekend from Europe and when I picked him up at the airport he was practically asleep on his feet. No way could he have driven that far the next day.

He should take transit and if needs a car there a family member delivers it later.

This storm and all the comparisons to snowzillas made me think of this gem.

A little on-the-nose in 2026 🤔

There's always a moron. Predictions are for 6-15 inches of snow in the DC area, and snow plus freezing rain and freezing sleet in VA on Sunday, particularly in the south, followed by a week where the max daily temps don't go above 20F. That ice is not going anywhere. Monday will be spent plowing the main roads, but every entrance and exit and all the secondary roads will be unplowed or very treacherous. Widespread power outages are expected if the freezing rain verifies.

Do not put lives at risk.

It's very dangerous to drive that far while jet lagged. He's not going to sleep on the plane, the flights from Europe are all daytime flights, they keep the lights on in the cabin and everything. I would drive him, PP.

The highway will be fine, but Raleigh is getting hit heavily with ice so local roads will be bad. I’m sure little will be open and there could be widespread power outages.

This is wild. This is an average day for my family in Vermont. Get a grip.

Yep, wild how living in a completely different region where the residents and city planners are accustomed to and prepared for receiving massive amounts of snow results in extremely different outcomes….and how people from colder climates seem to have such difficulty wrapping their heads around that fact.

Flights from Europe to the US are daytime flights, not red-eyes. He can go to bed early, wake up early, and head back just fine. He'll feel like it's later in the day, not earlier. As long as he beats the storm he's good and if he leaves at 7am he will beat it.

Have him be ready with his laundry sorted and help him pack the car so that he can just wake up, shower, grab food that you've made, and go. Do his laundry for him overnight. If he needed to run errands for groceries and supplies, get those now for him. Pack the car for him, make him breakfast, charge his phone.

You can do this.
