I am terrified of this weekends snowstorm!

I've lived here since 2007 with numerous other serious snow storms and the only time we lost power for any significant amount of time was the derecho, which was a warm weather storm. I've never lost power during a snow storm.

The snow is fine, especially with how cold it’s going to be, you will be able to clear it quickly since colder temps = snow that is lighter in texture. This area isn’t Chicago, Milwaukee, Buffalo etc. with snow removal infrastructure, but it’s also not Raleigh, Charlotte, or another southern state or city. The main roads will be cleared by Monday.

The problems will be the risk for ice on top of the snow and very low temperatures. As the storm track shifts north, it seems like more of a risk for ice. Ice is what brings down limbs and power lines. Powdery snow and not much winds (which is what they’re mostly predicting for this storm) isn’t super harmful.

Shit...I need to make a run to the library!

We need to talk to Jeff about implementing a backup DCUM based on carrier pigeons.

You probably will not be able to get out for a few days. Stock up on food and entertainment.

Power loss in these types of storms is a real concern.

OP you should have a generator.

Now it is late to that game so have everything else, flash lights with batteries etc... extra chargers charged for phones, extra food.

Stop panicking.

Speak for your own neighborhood. I plan to lose control of my SUV and hit the nearest utility pole.

This should not have made me laugh as hard as it did.

I have been here since 1991. The Derecho caused a three day outage in neighborhood. I don't recall any long outages during the various winter storms that basically ended life as we know it in the area.

Power loss would be a concern if this storm had a big wind component, which is typical. However, there are currently zero signals for that type of event with this storm, which is why it's important to follow reputable sources and not panic.

Drink. This is what we did the last time it happened. The good news is the snowdrifts will keep your wine cold.

My kid gets back from Europe Friday night and needs to be back in Blacksburg for classes on Monday. He already missed the first week (with permission). It's not looking good. I told him he better be prepared to drive down Saturday morning, jet lag or no jet lag.

He's going to have an accident, PP. Best to rest and miss the second week as well, honestly. His life is more important. My kid came home last weekend from Europe and when I picked him up at the airport he was practically asleep on his feet. No way could he have driven that far the next day.

If we lose power we will still have the gas oven and cooktop to eat what’s in the fridge. If the isolation drags on and we run out of fridge foods likely consume the pets. Then it’s the weakest in the house to become dinner.

Just a suggestion for OP on how to make it through.

The media is having a field day riling people up into a big frenzy about the snow.

Why not? Roads will be fine by Monday.
