| Best I can tell at Rocky AAP and honors are identical. |
lol! "No one has explained this to you yet." Apparently no one has explained to you that FCPS doesn't give the Iowa to test into Algebra anymore. We were told by our AAP teacher that everyone in 6th grade AAP is expected to do Algebra I next year unless SOL scores are middling. We will need to advocate for our kid to be put in honors 8th math if she scores close to or above advanced. And we will be doing that because Algebra 1 in 7th grade is ridiculous. |
Our oldest kid went to Rocky for AAP. This is probably true based on the student body. It's definitely not true for some of the middle schools that feed to Rocky for AAP. |
You would opt into Math7H, not Math 8. You can do that, just stay on top of it because they moved kids from Math7H into Algebra 1H without checking parents. Algebra1H is fine for some kids, they are ready for it and can handle it. I don’t get why they are pushing so many kids into A1H so much faster. The goal is A1 in 8th grade, no clue why that has meant pushing into A1H in 7th grade. |
| Yes thank you for the correction - it is Math7H instead of Math 8, but it's the 8th grade curriculum, apparently. We're opting way out of Algebra in 7th grade for ours. There's a whole year of math that should come before that! And it's not something we can realistically cover the summer before 7th. Hard pass. |
Now the push is to have more and more kids taking Algebra I Honors in 6th grade. |
Yeah, I know. I can see the need for Algebra1 in 6th, my son could have handled the class easily, but he and maybe a few other kids in his class would have been candidates. The idea that every ES will have 10-30 kids taking A1H in 6th is crazy. I fear that it is more keeping up with the Joneses and less this is a good fit for this kid. |
It sounds like Reid wants to move things from algebra in 9th (on grade), 8th (accelerated) or 7th (super accelerated) to 8th (on grade), 7th (accelerated), 6th (super accelerated). |
Your AAP teacher is giving you the wrong information. -Different AAP teacher. |
Really? I've heard this all over. The plan is no Iowa. If a kid scores passed advanced on SOL- even if it's 500 - they are automatically enrolled in Alg 1 in 7th. Maybe this is center or middle school dependent? |

FCPS is not using the IAAT.
Students that were signed up for Math7H last year were moved into A1H without checking with parents first. FCPS moved anyone with pass advanced on the math SOL were moved into A1H. Parents found out when kids got their schedules and had to scramble to get students moved into M7H, like they wanted. Students were assigned to A1H in 6th grade without contacting parents first. FCPS is pushing math acceleration in a strange way. Instead of giving parents the option of taking A1H, FCPS just put students in the class and made parents jump through hopes to move their kids into 6th grade AAP or M7H in 7th grade. I don't understand FCPSs actions here. Most students are taking A1 by 8th grade; there are schools where that is not the case but those tend to be Title 1 schools. And we keep reading posts and hearing from teachers that there are 8th graders struggling with algebra. I would guess that there are 6th and 7th graders struggling this year but whose parents don't want to move their kids to the right class because they see that as saying their kid is not advanced. I can see schools fighting having kids moved to 6th grade AAP or M7H out of Algebra because there is so much pressure to get kids into Algebra early. It is stupid. Look at the test scores and grades, give parents and students the option. If a kid has a grade lower than a B, there should be an automatic conversation to explore changing the math class. |
Who does the signing up? Is it the elementary staff or middle school staff. I've made it very clear that we aren't doing Algebra 1 in 7th but maybe I need to make sure I'm communicating with the right people. |
Last year the advanced math students in 6th grade were given the IAAT. After the fact, FCPS decided that students didn’t need a 91st percentile on the IAAT anymore and decided to only look at SOL scores. At least three students in my child’s class scored in the 30th percentile in the IAAT and I know at least one is taking Algebra I Honors this year in 7th grade. |
Yikes. This is my fear. There's a solid chance my kid will score just at passed advanced this year in AAP 6th, but she has no business being in Alg I next year. |
Every AAP center can definitely manage a class, even if it's a small one. |
