FCPS is not using the IAAT. Students that were signed up for Math7H last year were moved into A1H without checking with parents first. FCPS moved anyone with pass advanced on the math SOL were moved into A1H. Parents found out when kids got their schedules and had to scramble to get students moved into M7H, like they wanted. Students were assigned to A1H in 6th grade without contacting parents first. FCPS is pushing math acceleration in a strange way. Instead of giving parents the option of taking A1H, FCPS just put students in the class and made parents jump through hopes to move their kids into 6th grade AAP or M7H in 7th grade. I don't understand FCPSs actions here. Most students are taking A1 by 8th grade; there are schools where that is not the case but those tend to be Title 1 schools. And we keep reading posts and hearing from teachers that there are 8th graders struggling with algebra. I would guess that there are 6th and 7th graders struggling this year but whose parents don't want to move their kids to the right class because they see that as saying their kid is not advanced. I can see schools fighting having kids moved to 6th grade AAP or M7H out of Algebra because there is so much pressure to get kids into Algebra early. It is stupid. Look at the test scores and grades, give parents and students the option. If a kid has a grade lower than a B, there should be an automatic conversation to explore changing the math class.
