Why are southerners so obsessed with being southern?

So, it seems like people all over the US want to cosplay being Southern. Doesn't appeal to me, personally, but I think they have a point.

So Southern culture is inherently bad? Is that your point?

That's quite a biased podcast to say that rural American culture is racist. I guess that podcast didn't mention segregation and racism in New England cities where people attend schools and buy homes in areas that are mostly, if not all, wealthy and white.

Washington DC was built on slave labor, but sure let's continue to pretend like we're better people than southerners. My children's campus was literally a slave-holding farm, but the history teacher said to me "oh I'll never set foot in Alabama." Ignorance pretending to be virtue.

You have not been in Maine then.

You can't get there from here.

It is funny how it apparently didn't mention all those racially restrictive covenants and segregated schools that were so popular in northern states with their superior culture. Just skipped right over that part! I'll give this podcast a pass.

I read that in a Bert & I accent.

Yes, southern Delaware is like that. I agree and don't know what appeals about the culture.

Don't try to blame southerners and rural folks for the racism of Delaware's residents.

Just realized, as a midwesterner, my family is relatively new to America. All great grandparents born in Northern Europe. Farmers who moved west immediately upon arrival, after the civil war.

Hello...DC is southern.

No one thinks that way, because geographically we aren't while culturally we are.

Yes, because nobody wants to leave near and go to school with poor white trash.

Most Southerners don't call it this. Though the fact that any of them do is pretty gross. But I know plenty of people from the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana (including a bunch of black folks) and none of them call it the War of Norther Aggression. But then they aren't racist, so that's probably why.

I went to school in GA. My GA History Teacher told us that the South "really won" because they killed more people.

I don’t like the south but people from every region are equally into the local culture.

I guess you’ve never heard the old phrase. DC: northern charm, southern efficiency.
