If cities won't do more on their own, then yes. |
Let's test pilot it and see how it goes. Things are looking pretty good in DC. |
Nothing is safe if it’s free, easy to bypass ticket, and/or allows vagrants, drug addicts, ex cons, sex offenders, and mentally ill to loiter on it all day. You would not ride in a car with 1 of the above but we’re supposed to pretend a train full of dozens of the above is “safe”? |
It would have taken more than a few seconds to simply get to the man, even if they were in the same car. And they probably wouldn't have been. There are situations where trained police could help, but this wasn't one of them. There aren't a lot of situations where untrained national guard can help. |
OP’s selective outrage is nauseating. |
Does the victim being a pretty blonde girl obligate the media to report on it instead of the other murders that happen? |
Everyone thinks they would 'do' something but, it is really easy to be an armchair quarterback. You are safe at home and you have no idea how you would have reacted so stop judging so harshly |
This is why I avoid the metro and do not let my children ride the metro.
Public transportation is not safe anymore. |
This incident is horrific. How many of us do exactly what that poor young woman was doing every day - sitting on public transportation, minding her own business, surrounded by strangers, just trying to get home after a day at work?
We need to do more in this country to get the mentally ill off the street. This could have happened to any of us. |
My heart breaks too. Why on earth was he running around free? The justice system in this country sucks. |
If we're supposed to refrain from judgement of the bystanders who could have helped, does that mean we're supposed to refrain from judgement of the murderer, too? |
I still disagree. His agitated movements and demeanor indicated he wasn't okay mentally.and a trained eye would have noticed and a security person could have moved closer to him. On a daily basis, our church feeds hundreds of homeless men who wouldn't hurt anyone. Some individuals just stand out. |

I think this video is Kitty Genovese all over again. It’s easy to watch the video, which you know is of a stabbing, and be confused about why people didn’t spring into whatever action you think was appropriate. Especially if you’re already arriving at the story on your authoritarian crusade parade.
For the people in the moment, I think it was probably a LOT more confusing and I don’t think they acted with indifference. They were normal people in a totally unexpected, very weird situation and I doubt anyone on the train knew what had happened right away. |
