CBP can ask you about your citizenship during a stop. Although there is no requirement to prove it, I would not mess with this in the current environment. Not all states include citizenship on the REAL ID. Get a passport card. Anyone who is here legally and is not a citizen should be carrying proof that they are in the US legally.
