I think "woke" has been weaponized by both sides.
I don't like it because it seems to describe a static state, whereas I think people need to constantly be thinking about systems of inclusion or exclusion and the impacts they are having. |
PP here and I agree. The use of woke to police language was and is an extremely effective strategy the elite used and still use to continue their repression of the working classes. Part of the anger and bewilderment from people like OP is that there has been a small reclamation of language from the wealthy elites. OP is angry that her linguistic tool of oppression is slightly less effective than it used to be. |
Here's a thought--white people didn't really refer to being woke until about 10 years ago, with the Black Lives Matter movement. Which, as one journalist pointed out, was about the most innocuous way of stating what should be obvious that could have been stated. Then whites pick up a long-used term in support of BLM (stay alert), and right wingers use the word to jeer at those whites. Definitely a hint of race-traitor accusation going on there. |
Wait, woke is a tool the elite use to oppress the proles? |
| MAGA will go down in history as the most uneducated and brainwashed Americans since those who convinced themselves that it was OK to own slaves. Say whatever you need to say to yourselves to sleep at night. |
Yes, please do try to keep up. Do you think all these massive corporations embraced woke so thoroughly out of the goodness of their hearts? Do you think Amazon and other workplaces fighting off union efforts spent as much money as they did on internal work efforts because they love their workers so very, very much? |
Be sure to spread this message far and wide. Write your elected officials and ask why they're not doing more to explain to everyone that you're either woke or stupid. These are the kinds of strategies that win elections. |
Spot on |
Genuinely asking - how does being aware of offensive, racist, misogynistic, homophobic language repress the working class? |
So woke policies didn't steal your white jobs? It's hard to keep up. |
By casting certain beliefs in a false light (eg, that believing in basic biology makes someone a bigot, or that believing that abortion is wrong is actually intended to suppress women). It demands that people ascribe malicious motives to beliefs that lie outside of the acceptable woke parameters. It also, very significantly, specifically identifies religious beliefs as racist, misogynistic, and sexist. It also describes our entire system of government and economy as inherently racist. It's disingenuous to frame wokeness as merely trying to make people kinder and gentler; on the contrary, it is a revolutionary belief system designed to destroy our democracy, our capitalist economy, and our religions. You can't just demand everyone give up everything precious to them, and then expect that they will do it to avoid being called a bigot. |
Do you think it's fair that someone with lower test scores, fewer rigorous courses and lower grades gets a seat at a state college in a hard sciences major? I don't. (White woman) |
How is this twisted into an "elites assault on the working class" thing? Somehow the working class suddenly does not include any marginalized people? Everyone in the working class is straight, white, male and Christian? Seems to me you didn't really mean "working class" when you said "working class." |
