It’s weird but I think it’s a mental roadblock for them that international travel is something they can’t afford so they somehow don’t see it. To be fair they probably can’t actually afford all of their Disney trips but my husband’s family spends literally every cent they have of the not horrible but not great salary they have and refuse to save for retirement because my BIL says he’ll just work until he drops dead so he might as well enjoy his time now.

It’s so weird that people value international travel and have never travelled the breadth of their own country.

I know they will argue about the cultural experience, but there is very little culture any more in the typical
Tourist hotspots. Yes, you get to see the old buildings but most people are going on the English speaking tour with their English speaking tourist friends, staying at English speaking chain hotels, and found to safe chain or predictable restaurants. They’re not going into the country and exploring, much like they don’t go into their own country to explore anything beyond their own worlds or tourist areas.

This is the poster you responded to and I generally agree with what you're saying but I do think international travel has more benefits than going to Disney or Universal repeatedly. I don't get that at all. I would go once or twice with my kids but not for every vacation. We also love road tripping and national parks and we've invited BIL and SIL on some of those trips and they don't "want to waste his vacation time" on going to anything but Disney/universal.

My family members may be uneducated, and at times, have stated some racist stuff themselves (old country immigrants), but they would never abuse the POA for a family member, nor do they tolerate addicts.

So, it sounds like they can take multiple domestic trips for the cost of one international trip and that's a perfectly valid choice. They can't afford to travel internationally (at the same rate they travel currently). They don't have to scrimp and save to travel internationally just to seem more interesting to you. You seem pretty judgmental so you would probably still say they chose a trite, touristy area like Rome or Paris.
