Is FCPS considering closing for Friday June 6 now that Eid begins earlier?

No kidding. We start earlier and earlier and still end “late”.

What obligations do people who observe Eid have to do on the day? Are they not allowed to work that day? It’s crazy to me that FCPS gives Diwali off because most festivities are in the evening and people are perfectly capable of going to work or school on Diwali. Wondering what’s required on Eid.

Except FLE. That’s a bridge too far.

Not sure but could be similar to why someone else prefers entire day off on Christmas.

Looks like similar to Christmas, you want FCPS to give five days off for Diwali.

"Diwali is celebrated over five days.
DAY ONE: People clean their homes and shop for gold or kitchen utensils to help bring good fortune.
DAY TWO: People decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powders or sand.
DAY THREE: On the main day of the festival, families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi, followed by mouth-watering feasts and firework festivities.
DAY FOUR: This is the first day of the new year, when friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season.
DAY FIVE: Brothers visit their married sisters, who welcome them with love and a lavish meal"

Big difference. The date of Christmas is the same. When did we find out about Eid date? Within the last day or so.
Kind of short notice to change the school calendar.

But don't dare suggest that Spring Break should align with Easter.

We've been through this before. That is to align with other school systems in the area where teachers may have kids in school. Makes perfect sense.

FWIW, where I grew up--in the Bible Belt--Easter had nothing to do with Spring break.

And, we also know years ahead of time when Easter is.

Doesn't it begin the night before? Will kids with June 5 graduation skip it?

How does labeling the calendar as an O day impact you if you don't celebrate the holiday? It literally doesn't.

Not sure. But looks like a snow day holiday, won't know until the day before.

The issue came up because the APS school board nearly closed school for 6/6 due to the last minute shift of the Eid holiday, despite many activities planned for that day. Parents objected and they voted the change down in a split decision.

No one cares if the change is making it an “O” day.

Education and efficiency certainly don't come first.

Why does FCPS need to provide an alternate graduation ceremony for people that are choosing to skip it?
