US loses 2nd jet at sea

It's the 5th major mishap while under defense secretary Hegseth. 3 lost planes, a collison, an accident shooting of another plane.

The Truman has been operating in the Red Sea since last year when it was deployed to help protect commercial ships against near-constant attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The carrier was slated to come home last month, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth extended its deployment while ordering another carrier -- the USS Carl Vinson -- to the region to bolster military power.

Also I'm not pilot but this reminds me of opening scene in Top Gun --- jet is landing quickly and a wire on the ship stops it.

The jet failing to land on the ship is either due to the pilot on the jet not landing exactly right so that the hook catches on the wire on the ship or the ship moving out of position so that the hook doesn't catch.

Alright that last bit will do it. Being on a Navy ship is horrible, and the Navy has many problems going back multiple administrations, but having your deployment extended is completely demoralizing.

I wonder if systems are being hacked on the ship or the planes? Sort of like the doomsday scenario of vehicles being remotely hacked and your brakes no longer work when you push on the pedal on the highway.

The carrier groups have been over deployed protecting Israel. The normal rotations of groups for refit and maintenance has been thrown away. This has lead to over worked crews, delayed maintenance, skipping training, etc.

There is normally no carrier group deployed to protect Israel. So the navy moves groups out of their deployment area and expands the area each group covers. This puts the groups under additional strain and increases maintenance. It’s a feed back loop.

The US Pacific fleet presence is reduced. This has allowed China a free hand. Keeping Israel safe as it attacks the majority of the Middle East comes with a big price tag.
