Why is lack of Real ID an issue if you have a passport or don’t fly?

I had to rush to get a Real ID 3 years ago when my parent was hospitalized at Ft Belvoir. Left from work with only a DL, obviously no passport or other documentation with me. I think I was issued a temporary pass under emergency circumstances but eventually had to get a Real ID via dmv (took me two trips - one back home to get my marriage license from 25+ years ago) and then I could get onto the base.

I still haven’t renewed my passport. It expired.

OP here — I renewed mine ans found out it didn’t change the expiration date either, which ticked me off. My expires at the end of the year, so I’ve got to go back. Not happy.

Make the real id mandatory for alcohol , ss, and cigarettes, then everyone who is refusing to get one immediately get one without hesitation

I heard the other day that Real ID will be required to drive to Arlington Cemetery, but not if you take Metro there.

Explain how this makes sense?
