Why is lack of Real ID an issue if you have a passport or don’t fly?

Passports are not processing any longer

The website is down for online renewals of course

This is voter suppression

Really? I read that it was taking a very long time to process renewals, but the website seems to be working for me.

But yes, agree that if you have a passport--then it shouldn't be an issue to not have a real ID.

They’re not taking any longer than usual. We got 2 back in 5 weeks. Non expedited.

Ditto.

US Passports and passport cards also prove legal residency. So again, why do we need REAL ID?

We don’t.

Because people carry their drivers licenses with them everywhere - passports are generally not in your wallet all the time. With a passport card, if you want to carry it at all times, go ahead. But that makes the passport more expensive too (because the card is extra).

If you don't want a REAL ID don't get one. I don't care. For some people, they are more convenient than carrying a passport at all times.

Wait. Why do you need ID on you at all times? I donT take my drivers license / REAL ID with me if I I’m not driving.

Renewed my license in Maryland last year and was given a new one with a real ID. No options not to have one, nice and simple and easy and no concerns when I fly.

It's an issue when an unexpected death in the family means you suddenly need to move your elderly relative to a far away state into a new nursing facility (near extended family), and they have zero ID and no one else still alive knows where their original paperwork could possibly be.

All paperwork can be replaced. You can get a new birth certificate, social security card, etc. Sorry the world doesn't revolve around your particular circumstance. But, this has been in the works for decades. If you had a problem with it you could have spoken up sooner.

That's a good reason to get the ID in advance. Also the Trump admin is making noise about social security fraud and there's been case of live senior citizens being declared dead and other idiocy. Having the right ID will help.

Who are you talking to??? As I said, I have my real ID and a passports I just don’t understand why all they hype about people not having them when there are plenty of people who do not have have an immediate (if ever) need for one, especially if you have a passport. You are not legally required to have identification on you at all times.

My friend sure wishes the family had done that before they died; but now they have to drive a dementia patient across the country because they won't be allowed to fly.

That’s is a totally different issue. Even if they have real ID, it isn’t any good if the elderly relative doesn’t know where it is.

People don't realize it's a problem until it is one.

They will be allowed to fly. It will just take A LONG time to go through extra security. You can fly with no ID at all. It just takes a lot longer. Good luck if you're flying May 7 or 8. I would add in 3-4 hours because you know you will not be alone in going through extra security.

That is yet another new issue that elderly people living in a nursing home, who probably assumed they'd never need to drive or fly again or prove their identity in some new way, could not have anticipated. Seems there should be some exceptions.

Explain how San adult can fly without any form of id.

People lose their IDs or have them stolen on vacation all the time. There is a secondary security screening they can do that involves a supervisor and lots of questions. It can be done. It’s not a quick process but you can fly with zero ID.
