Why is lack of Real ID an issue if you have a passport or don’t fly?

You can get it within 365 days of the expiration of your license and it will extend out to the full expiration period (5 years I think)

You can enter federal buildings with a passport (book or card). In hindsight I should’ve just gotten a passport card instead of real ID. There is no reason to have both and the passport is more useful. I just need my drivers license then to drive.

Slightly off topic, but the people freaking out about real id have me confused…I moved to Virginia in 2016 and got what I thought was a real id then…it has a black star in the corner and I had to show a passport or something to get it. Do I not have a real id? And if it is, then I don’t understand the issue if I’ve literally had this since 2016…

Passports are not processing any longer

The website is down for online renewals of course

This is voter suppression

Real ID proves your legal residence in the US. ICE has been showing up at random places to arrest "illegals" so this is a way to prove your right to be here. There was a Reddit thread yesterday about how ICE was hanging out at a Metro station and stopping people, for example.

Real ID: Solving the 9/11 problem 20 years later. And we wonder why most Americans are okay with a little DOGE here and there with government overreach. Not protecting anyone, invading privacy, and probably cost billions of dollars. Hard no.

Really? I read that it was taking a very long time to process renewals, but the website seems to be working for me.

But yes, agree that if you have a passport--then it shouldn't be an issue to not have a real ID.

Yes, if you have the star in the top right corner, that's a Real ID.

It's an issue because Real ID requires a lot more documentation about who you are and where you live. The government wants that information.

I hate to break it to you, but the government has all that information, and thanks to DOGE it looks like Russia has all your information too.

https://www.npr.org/2025/04/27/1247657625/doge-whistleblower-nlrb
NPR's cybersecurity correspondent Jenna McLaughlin recently broke a story about a whistleblower inside the federal government who says DOGE representatives appear to have taken sensitive data, then covered their tracks. Daniel Berulis works for the National Labor Relations Board and he has shared evidence that DOGE engineers disabled security protocols, exported reams of sensitive data and used a "hacker's toolkit" to hide their activities. And he thinks his agency is not alone.

US Passports and passport cards also prove legal residency. So again, why do we need REAL ID?

My renewal was quick. The delivery took long. It went from alabama(?) to Illinois to Hawaii (a couple islands) then to Virginia.

Because people carry their drivers licenses with them everywhere - passports are generally not in your wallet all the time. With a passport card, if you want to carry it at all times, go ahead. But that makes the passport more expensive too (because the card is extra).

If you don't want a REAL ID don't get one. I don't care. For some people, they are more convenient than carrying a passport at all times.

They’re not taking any longer than usual. We got 2 back in 5 weeks. Non expedited.

Wait. Why do you need ID on you at all times? I donT take my drivers license / REAL ID with me if I I’m not driving.
