The DLs are not relevant here, and you're lying about the SSN. |
I really wish DCUM had the feature to pin important info/facts to the top of posts that would roll with each page of the thread. It'd save the same question being asked over and over. If an immigrant is in the US and has a SSN, they are a LEGAL immigrant. Illegal immigrants - those who sneak in - cannot get SSNs issued to them by the SSA. I work for the SSA. I know what I'm talking about. Illegal immigrants CAN get something called an ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number). ITINs look similar to SSNs - their format is 123-45-6789. But they are not the same as a SSN. What is the difference between a SSN and ITIN? -Both allow the individual to pay taxes, HOWEVER, only those with a SSN are allowed to collect from the services they pay into. Meaning that only green card holders or naturalized citizens with SSNs who paid into the Social Security system the required number of years can collect benefits at retirement. Those with ITINs can NEVER collect any of the benefits they paid. They can never collect Social Security when they hit 62/67. ITIN holders annually pay around $30mil in taxes - meaning they pay INTO social security and the other withholding taxes - that they will never get to use. Since the SSN and ITIN formats are the same, I am wondering if what they actually canceled were ITINs. Either way, it's a huge hit to the economy. I would love some clarification from the administration on which numbers were actually cancelled. Cancelling the SSNs of legal immigrants is literally 1 step away from cancelling the SSNs of US-born citizens. And if you don't see that, I'm sorry that you have a smooth brain. |
You know those scams where people claim you owe money or your Social Security number will be suspended? I used to laugh at those because SS numbers don’t get “suspended.” But now they do. |
The SSA is NOT the adjudicator of any person's immigration status. |
People are dead because he says so? I don't think that's how it works. |
THIS ^^. Why on earth would illegal immigrants be receiving SS benefits? It's unreal that there is any outrage about this at all. |
DP. Where is YOUR citation to back up your claim that these are legal immigrants? You've posited plenty of opinions, but no real facts - which means YOU also have zero idea. |
OH LOOK. Turns out these are indeed illegal immigrants. Sorry: "undocumented."
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a memorandum aimed at stopping undocumented immigrants and other ineligible people from obtaining Social Security Act benefits, the White House said. Some undocumented workers obtain jobs by using fake or borrowed Social Security numbers and pay into Social Security, but are not eligible to receive social security benefits under current law. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/trump-signs-memo-barring-undocumented-immigrants-from-receiving-social-security-benefits/ar-AA1CZqtz?ocid=BingNewsSerp |
That’s a different story. The OP of this thread was about immigrants with legally obtained social security numbers being re-classified as deceased to encourage them to self deport. The article you linked is about people who are fraudulently using other people’s social security numbers. It was never legal for them to use these numbers, let alone collect any benefits. |
Under the Biden admin illegal immigrants could get the ITIN numbers after 6 months after applying. The ITIN numbers allow the illegals to work legally.
We helped out a guy from Medellin Colombia through the process. Unlike common perception it was not easy for him to get cash under the table jobs. He probably applied at 30 places before he got a job. All the business told my sister they could not hire him until he had the ITINnumber as the penalties are very large to businesses not paying legal. He worked the cash job until his ITIN number came in upon which he was put on the legal payroll. |
God - you people are such liars. ITINs don't allow people to work legally. They allow people to pay taxes. It's not work authorization. |
This isn’t the owning of the libs you think it is. One, because someone can steal your SSN and fraudulently use it. If Trump’s response is to declare you/ your SSN dead, then rather than resolving the fraud, you lose your ability to bank, have a drivers license of passport, buy or rent a home, earn a living, and obviously draw benefits. Mt BFF had their SSN stolen in the IRS databreach. The correct response was to resolve the fraud, not to legally kill her SSN. And that took months to resolve and was a real nightmare. If she had just been declared dead by SSA, she would literally lose the ability to live or work. And two because, yes, you are correct. Contrary to the misinformation and hysteria on here, illegal immigrant don’t get benefits. Which doesn’t stop the person whose number the stole from getting benefits while this is resolved. Also note— the number is used to work and pay into SSA. But, the person using a fraudulent number (or a visa holder with a lawful number), pays FICA taxes, but is not eligible for benefits. Which is one of the main reasons SSA is still solvent. |
Right now we have a he said / she said situation. Each case needs to be adjudicated. No one here can say whether these 6k, a few of the, or most of them are here legally. I do wonder if these folks are people who sought asylum. Didn’t the GOP claim agencies were broadening the definition inappropriately during the last administration? |
Just remembered them saying that international law re asylum required asylum seekers to seek asylum in a neighboring country. If they came here to work, the process is different. You can’t claim asylum from several countries away unless you’re a special class (eg, Afghanis who helped the US government overseas and cut a deal in exchange for that help). If people came |
