Good for Harvard. I don't normally root for Harvard, but after the pathetic display of cowardice by Big Law, I will cheer on any institution that fights back against the Republican attack on science, research, and the rule of law. This has nothing to do with DEI or Israel. This is a creeping dictatorship and an assault on everything that made America a bastion for freedom of speech and the pursuit of knowledge. I only wish there were more institutions resisting.

If you are in favor of these cuts because you are fearful of antisemitism or you think that Harvard is full of antisemites, you are foolish. The govt-university partnership for research was put in place post WW2 and is the basis of the innovation ecosystem of the United States. It has been extremely productive for America. If the govt wants to break that partnership by imposing limitations on the college, they are free to do so.

If the country doesn’t want premier research universities, we won’t have premier research universities. No university can afford to fund this on their own for the good of the United States.

What we won’t have is premier research universities where free expression is stifled. Those two things don’t work together. If you want creativity and big ideas out of people, you can’t tell them what to think like the govt is trying to do right now.

It wants to retain its constitutional rights and continue the research that it has done for decades using federal funds.

Since World War II, virtually all significant research, development, and innovation in the United States has happened in university laboratory settings, with the benefits of the work product accruing to the government under these arrangements. This has benefited the people of the United States tremendously. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Cutting off the funding pretty much guarantees a brain drain to other countries.
