This is going badly

This man’s a moron. The jobs aren’t coming back and if they do no one is going to pay you $50 bucks an hour to put a t-shirt in a box. They will pay you $5 an hour. And you will take it because maybe you’ll be able to feed your family for a month on that $20 bag of rice.

So, so stupid. Just think something thru.

+1 I don’t think targeted well planned tariffs are all that bad. But blanket tariffs on the entire planet simultaneously with minimal warning for companies to prepare is just dumb.

Tariffs on remote islands populated by nothing but penguins says it all. This WAS NOT thought through. Trump is an idiot.

It'd be too strong to say I was rooting for Trump or that I thought he'd to a good job, but I thought there was a *chance* he'd do a good job, and, for the sake of the country, I was really hoping he would. I didn't vote for him, but I also never seriously considered voting for Harris or Biden. I thought Trump's first term was at moments scary but overall pretty good.

With the wind-up, let me say: geez Louise this is going shittily.

You are missing the big picture. It’s bad for Wall Street. But this is going great if you are from Main Street.
No pain, no gain. Finally a president who is fighting for main street.
Manufacturing jobs will have to come back to the US. If these corporations don’t do it, they will keep watching their stock prices sinking.

Bullshit. Main Street is getting clobbered by this.

Stop spewing BS here.

Was one of these "scary moments" when he tried a violent coup? That should have been enough for anyone with half a brain to know what Trump.2 would look like. Clearly you're not smart enough and are also a liar, because you did vote for him this second time around and now are looking for absolution on an anonymous board.

Sigh. I know. Voting for sensible people was just too hard.

Thanks a lot.

He didn't do a good job in his last term.
He didn't do a good job with his casinos, airline, steaks, university or foundation and it turns out the Trump Org is nothing but an aggregation of shell companies that launder money.

What made you think this would go even remotely as well as the first time?

After watching the travesty of his first term, his shambolic approach to COVID, his many appearances in court which culminated in no fewer than 34 felony convictions (I mean, he couldn't have gotten a job as a mall cop with his felony convictions), and seeing him buoyed to power once again by rabid MAGA fans, as well as people like OP who genuinely educate themselves on issues, I can only conclude that he is some sort of warlock or a wizard. I met him in person several times pre-2016, and there was nothing appealing about him, he was an empty windbag in an expensive suit and he was fulsome and shallow. But there is something about him that commands intense loyalty even as his cast-offs are being indicted right and left. So I surmise that there is something supernatural about him.

OP here. Sort of. A lot of this is stuff that I knew he'd find appealing, but the guy says a lot of stuff that isn't true-- mexico paying for it and all that. Plus, for all his faults, I did think that he was sort of correct in his complaint that he was constantly stymied in his first term by entrenched power structures that hated him and thought he was a joke. Tbh, I still think that. The fact that a huge share of the country called themselves the Resistance-- as though they were standing up to tanks in the streets of 1968 Prague-- was sort of absurd, and I thought it was revealing that so many members of our social elite were like "yeah, that's a reasonable thing to do."

This time though it seems different. It seems like he's able to do a lot more of the stuff he said he'd do. But he's also not doing some of the better stuff he said he would. So from my vantage point, a big vibe I got from his campaign was that he would be pragmatic and approach even some Dems to high-level positions (which he did, I guess) and avoid weapon using the justice system. The hardcore small-government shtick and the EOs though all seem like he's just out for blood.

I’m the pp who asked the question. Thank you for answering. I can’t say I saw the pragmatic and bipartisan candidate that you did. (I am curious if you went back now, or in a few years, and watched his rallies if you would still see the same thing, or if you’d see some other, darker/less competent side of him peeking through).

At any rate, here we all are together in this new place. It certainly does seem to be going badly. Quite.

Big picture doesn’t matter if the person is suffering. Especially since the people implementing these things are not going to experience the negative effects.

I’ve never seen so many people so excited to get broke.

It's wild. Someone told me today that this is going to be a painful ride but it will be worth it to "bring manufacturing back to the U.S." ... like, zero understanding of how the economy works in 2025. I really do think a lot of people who are watching only Fox believe this is short term pain for long term gain, despite NO credible evidence of that being the case. The blind faith really is cult-like.

PP. I don’t know if these people are nurturing some sort of romantic vision of the U.S. as a grand manufacturing nation with women going to work like Rosie the Riveter, but I agree, it’s bizarre. I would say that when Main Street is affected, people will see the light, but I think that is assuming too much logical thinking.

Will be interesting to see what happens with trump’s appeal to cut interest rates. The March numbers obviously don’t reflect liberation day. Cutting rates when inflation is still high and likely to rise due to tariffs - not good.

I have a big problem with people like you. And your thought process.

Ok but I will take anyone who is changing their mind now. I don’t want o demonize people and make them not want to admit they were wrong. The faster more people come to that conclusion the better.

You are all in a cult led by an emperor with no clothes. These tariffs are idiotic and the world is realigning trade routes, and will continue on with their own retaliatory and reciprocal tariff rates until our stock market goes down by 50% or more. They’d rather do that than capitulate to a bloviating narcissist filled with angry hubris and his lemmings. Nice work. We had the an economy that was the world’s envy. You fks and your fringe economics. You fks.

You are a moron. I work for a small manufacturer. We spent the last two days frantically trying to figure out what these taxes are going to do to our supply chains, and we were told by one of our main suppliers that they are likely not shipping to the US anymore. There’s no US replacement for their component.

Have you considered these two things are connected? Like the people in the “entrenched power structures” were right all along?

They’re parroting what Trump and musk said - it’s going to get bad before it gets better. But they never said who it will get better for. Just like Trump said he’d end the war in Ukraine on day 1. He never said in whose favor it would be - we know now it’s not Ukraine’s.
