I would not reach out. And I would tell your kid to be sensitive about it. I told mine she got in because she actually asked (they must be talking about it) and told her not to bring it up again with other kids. She understood why. Her little brother has SN so we talk a lot in our house about ability and effort.

I also told my daughter not to talk about it.

The kids absolutely will be talking about it.

How do these kids not get in?

I don't get it either. Some profiles on here are In and others with far better scores are not in. **Mind f blown***

We are sitting here discussing how it’s possible that everyone with lower scores got in, but DD did not. What do we have to do?!

Appeal.

Could it be a poor HOPE?

I will be appealing. I feel like it was her reading skills assessments. She has improved a lot and has had support from a private tutor. I will submit fresh reading scores and get privately tested. How to do that all by May 1 including spring break in there. Ugh.

The HOPE is one of the most important parts. It’s where teachers get to say their peace and it is very valued. You should get the HOPE score. Likely the subjects weren’t checked and the teacher did not indicate that your child needs extra opportunities for enrichment. For most high scoring kids who don’t get in I think it comes down to the HOPE. Also if the teacher samples of work are not really showing unique skills that hurts the packet. When my son got in he didn’t have great scores but his teacher checked every box as needing extra extensions because he was advanced in every subject.

Thank you for this— He’s our first so this process was new for us. Definitely disappointed because we thought the program would be a great fit for him. His teacher constantly tells us that he is not challenged enough by the material, which our son echos. We also thought it would be a great fit socially and were looking forward to him being with kids with similar interests. But alas, onward and upward!

100% the difference comes down to hope scores. That and pyramid.
I have heard the hope score is very highly weighted. That is part of what makes this so frustrating. We are at a center school in Langley pyramid and it is well known that if you want your kid in AAP you try to request a specific 2nd grade teacher because she will go to bat and put together an excellent packet for your kid.

I would appeal in this situation. I appealed successful for my child 2 yrs ago and am glad I didn’t give up after the initial rejection. DC is thriving.

This is surprising. Stats sound good.

Example of why you should always request the HOPE; there must be be something in there that contradicts the stellar stats.

Have a first year teacher who I truly think has no idea how to identify his needs. When I asked during parent teacher conference about the application she seemed surprised I was asking and didn’t think he was a good fit. I have a daughter thriving in full time AAP and my son catches on to things much quicker than she does and just gets the bigger picture
