Did he pick Charles Allen to join the task force?

Bowser seems extremely competent and sane when you compare her to many members of the DC Council.

Maybe she looks competent compared to her council. Anyone, even Trump, looks like a genius compared to the DC council. However, under Bowser's leadership, DC became a capital crime, and corruption in the DC government returned with her big time. She wears kneepads when talking to developers who profit from vouchers. She destroyed several communities, populating them with people with mental health problems and criminal records.

Trump is handing us to Putin he’s a dictator he’s Hitler you fool

Yes, Trump is Hitler and Bowser is the fool who went to Mar a Lago to kiss the ring of Hitler. Bowser and Trump are aligned, don't you see that fool.

Please enjoy a newspaper sometime.

You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. Here are the facts:

* 2023 saw the highest number of homicides in DC since 1997.
* The DC Police is understaffed by at least 500 officers.
* The DC crime lab remains unaccredited.
* There were over 950 carjackings in 2023 - that's the equivalent of 2.6 carjackings per day! In 2024 there were still 496 carjackings and 70% of those were at gunpoint.

We still have a long way to go.

Wasn't there a year between 2023 and the current year? Hm.

Yes, that would be the year we saw 496 carjackings, more than one per day.

By your own post, that’s half as many as 2023. That’s a great trend, and in line with the steep decline in crime. Still room to improve but good news.

NP, Ward 3 has had a steep uptick in crime correlating to policy changes. But maybe the mayor will say it was a small price to reduce crime across the rest of the district.

If I can carry a concealed weapon I may visit DC and spend some money more often.

Me too. Less reason to fear the roving gangs of “youths” wearing balaclavas

Good. 100% for this.

Stephen Miller is in charge. I’d love to see that — I think the surgeon will capitulate immediately and sycophant as needed for his personal interests

The fare evasion is often linked to other crimes. But agreed, without specific focus on carjackings, armed muggings where they steal your phone and your jacket, the shoplifters who run out with a whole armful of stuff, and all the other major problems that affect safety and quality of life … I’m skeptical.

Shoplifting was specifically mentioned, and carjackings, too, I thought?

Have some of us forgotten about 2024? You know when crime went down?

It went down slightly from previous record-breaking highs.

Who cares if they in fact stop the ATVs and carjackings? After some soul searching I don’t care 🤷‍♂️

But they won’t. They will crack down on immigrants, unlegalize marijuana and eliminate gun control. It’s all posturing for the folks at home who will just eat it up.

I do not care about the bolded. I’m a PP and a long time DC resident and I would welcome a sharp drop off in the number of Venezuelan moped drivers driving the wrong way down Connecticut and on sidewalks. Shrug

I might be sad for a moment about the hundreds of unpapered housecleaners and parking garage attendants living among us who crossed the border illegally, but they made a deal with the devil when they did it.

And although I voted to legalize marijuana way back when, I regret that. The city has become a disgusting public weed fest and so if that goes away, I can live with that — even as a casual partaker.

We clearly cannot have nice things. I am not the only tax paying long-term resident over the age of 26 who feels the way I do.

DC resident here, and I can't say I disagree with any of that.

Doesn't faze me. When is the last time a permit holder committed a crime with a firearm? Crimes are committed by - surprise!, criminals, who don't bother with formalities like permits, and likely wouldn't receive them anyway due to prior criminal conduct.

IIRC, it's been a couple of years.

It will be interesting to see how “crime” is defined. White collar crime will likely be overlooked. Will things that used to fall under “freedom of speech” protections be treated as “crimes” ?

I have a feeling retrocession to Maryland is inevitable when DC loses home rule and most of the rights granted. People won’t like what’s coming.

It's been like never.
