Trump assembles task force to crack down on D.C. crime

President Trump is setting up a task force of federal officials directed to crack down on crime and "maximize immigration enforcement" in D.C.

Not very impactful if it doesn’t specifically address youth crime.

This is the one and only thing I can enthusiastically get behind as a District resident of 30+ years and lifelong Dem.

We District voters clearly are not going to help ourselves here

This has to be an improvement over the status quo. The District brought this on themselves through their criminal-coddling policies.

I've got a bridge to sell you...

Focusing on fare evaders and immigrants rather than carjackers tells me they just want to stuff jails, not actually improve QOL.

The fare evasion is often linked to other crimes. But agreed, without specific focus on carjackings, armed muggings where they steal your phone and your jacket, the shoplifters who run out with a whole armful of stuff, and all the other major problems that affect safety and quality of life … I’m skeptical.

Finally something Donald Trump wants to do that I can get behind! Too bad local leaders weren't able to do it by themselves - they had plenty of time.

Nobody is thinking this is going to be used as an excuse to round up and jail protesters? Seriously?

This. If they actually wanted to make District residents safer, they'd be focusing on drug use (including fix the marijuana loophole and the attendant crime and lifestyle issues it creates), juvenile crime (and the related problems of truancy and parental abandonment), repeat offenders, community policing initiatives, and crimes against businesses that are pushing people to close or making it hard to be profitable.

They just want to deport people and harass young black people engaged in non-violent offenses. This will help exactly no one.

I'm pretty much in the same boat.

Yep, I'm betting they'll be really hard on kids selling water bottles on the mall and lax on everything else. Because actually solving problems is hard.

Absolutely it will be used for that. Look at how they are going after pro-Palestinian protesters on college campuses by revoking student visas and deporting. They will do this with protestors and other opponents of the Trump administration in DC as well.

If you are in the US on any kind of visa, including an H-1B, be very careful right now. Scrub your social media and think hard before participating in any public protest events. They will use anything as pretext. District residents are more vulnerable because there are fewer barriers than between them and the federal government.

Yes, please address the marijuana issues. I, initially, supported this, but now I regret it.

Fingers crossed, but I remain skeptical that it will impact crime in DC.
