That mega prison is committing some pretty egregious human rights abuses, and it's where Trump is interested in sending American criminals.

President Bukele has a fantastic response when a British reporter questioned him about the prison.

He responded- why do we have so many incarcerated? It started with a war that had nothing to do with us but you started and financed a war so brothers would kill brothers in our country, (referring to Salvadoran Civil War, 1979-1992, was a U.S./Soviet proxy war.)

So what happened? A million Salvadorans fled to the US and lived in ghettos and the parents were working so hard their kids formed gangs.

Then those gang members were deported to El Salvador. So what happened? You told us that we should follow your rules and not arrest minors. Well all the gang members were minors

So the gangs grew and terrorized the country. And we tried to follow the UN formulas for solving the problem and US formulas for solving it and EU formulas but nothing worked and it got worse and worse so we became the murder capital.

So we finally said those recipes might work in your country but it doesn’t in ours. So we solve the problem by incarcerating the people terrorized our country and now you complain we are doing it all wrong even though our country is now the safest in the western hemisphere.

That said, I do think that every Ukrainian should be offered asylum in the United States -- they are one of the few groups who can truly be called war refugees. I suspect that most Ukrainians will never leave the homeland they have fought so bravely in defense of, but as a gesture of goodwill it would be very powerful.

I don’t think you understand.

Putin wants to butcher the remaining Ukrainians alive today in order to eradicate their culture.

Trump is going to turn over the 240,000 Ukrainians currently in the U.S. on TPS to Putin. This is akin to FDR turning away the ships full of Jews during WW2 and sending them back to Hitler. Except Trump’s treachery is likely 10x more cases than what FDR did to German Jews.

People will be studying this 75 years from now and saying “WTF were Americans thinking?”

theres no need for 75 years from now- people, including americans have been what are Americans thinking since Trump was the GOP frontrunner.
of course theres all of my relatives who live in formerly colonized states and say that Americans have always been a facsist country for nonwhitres and are just reverting to the mean, 1965-2016 was an aberration and teh election of Barak Obama was a wake up call to the guys who were tearing up disco records in 1980 that their nation was getting away from them.

Most of the Ukrainians do not meet asylum criteria. The problem is that a lot of Ukrainians abused the program (U4U), a lot of people who came here was not even eligible for the program (like they were not in Ukraine on the day the war started, some of them lived in Europe for several years and wasn't even in Ukraine). A lot of fake boyfriends who are not Ukrainians came with Ukrainian girlfriends only by paying them a flight ticket price. A lot of Ukrainians paid several thousands of dollars to fake sponsors and now it popped up in the system that the same person sponsored dozens and sometimes even hundreds of Ukrainian. A lot of Ukrainians came under this program from the areas of Ukraine that were never affected by the war, just to have a free ride to US and now traveling across US and posting their travel blogs. Now instead of weeding out all the false refugees, the government might just shot down the program completely.

It sad that the program gets so abused. I thought it was absurd that they wanted to expand the program that was already generous to accommodate the Ukrainians. Democrats don't seem to get other people's suffering doesn't give them entitlement.

I would be fine accommodating the 200K Ukranians but only if we cancel 200K H-1b and green cards. Sorry, but there is war in the world and there are more important things than your tech bubble.

I can't believe you're trying to rationalize your depravity. Where's your ire toward Putin? Where's your ire toward Trump for siding with Putin? These Ukrainians would love to go back to a peaceful country, rather than stay here. Didn't the felon promise, swore up and down, that he'd end this day 1? If you're worried about Americans not getting enough assistance, blame the GOP for proposing to cut Medicare. Blame the billionaires. I see you have mild disdain for the tech CEO's, but I'm not sure how you are equating the two. But, logic isn't MAGA's strong suit.

Unfortunately, you are wrong about Ukrainians willing to go back to their country. Currently, they are all lining up at the immigration attorneys offices to find out their options to stay here at any cost, including illegally after parole expiration. There is a law suite ready to be filed up Ukrainians suing Nolan. You should follow some Ukrainians on Tik-tock to understand that none of them are planning to return back. Have you seen huge crowds of Ukrainians protesting in DC, Chicago, NYC, LA? They want the war to continue so they can stay in US on parole as long as possible.

80% of Ukraine is not under active attacks and pretty safe. Plus, at least half of those 250,000 came here not from Ukraine directly, but from Poland, Germany, France, Norway and other European countries who offered them refugee status. THey did not like it there because the language is difficult, no benefits, no jobs, so they moved to US even though under U4U they should not be eligible for the parole since they were not physically present in Ukraine on 2/24/22.

The jews were targets of their own government. The Ukrainians are not targets of their own government as far as I know. Perhaps if they are from the area that Putin wants to control its an accurate comparison but otherwise it's a different situation.

It definitely makes sense that we would offer them refuge since they are our allies though and are being attacked in war. Much more than South Africa.

You conveniently left out the part about human rights abuses perpetuated by Bekele. But no doubt he is popular. Lots of Latin Americans like strongman-type leaders (on both the right and left).

Also, there are a number of reasons Trump hasn't moved on revoking TPS for Salvadoreans.

1) Legal Barriers: Past attempts to end Salvadoran TPS in 2018 were blocked by courts (e.g., Ramos v. Nielsen), and the current designation, extended by Biden to Sept 2026, may face similar challenges if revoked early.

2) Extended Timeline: Unlike other TPS expirations, Salvadoran TPS doesn’t lapse until late 2026, reducing immediate pressure to act compared to more urgent cases. (Biden extended their TPS status for a year right before he left office).

3) Political/Economic Factors: There are around 230,000-263,000 Salvadoran TPS holders in the US and they contribute significantly the the US economy. The vast majority are not gang members but hardworking residents. In addition, their remittances account for a quarter of the GDP of El Salvador. Imagine what it would do to the El Salvador economy if that quickly dried up. Bekele is Trump's friend, and I doubt Trump will be quick to crash his economy.

Why? Why should any country in the modern era be forced by the world into giving up a blade of grass to an unlawfully invading enemy force?

There are many legal ways to come and to stay in US. Consult with immigration attorney to determine what are their options to stay here.

People who have used those legal channels are now in El Salvador because of their tattoos. Why would anyone want to come to the US anymore. So shameful.

Now we know the US is really being governed by Russia.

Why not? He’s perfectly happy about crashing our economy.

It’s isn’t 240,000 18-40 year old men. Lots of families. Elderly, mothers and kids. How does sending them back to starve and be slaughtered help Ukraine?
