Almost 200 kids at McLean HS soccer tryout for 30 spots in Varsity and 30 spots in JV.

Because according to the MAGAs, American football is an American sport and soccer is not.

Much larger Alumni and Booster club network and HS Football is the pipeline into college football. Unlike soccer, where the pipeline into College soccer is through Club Soccer. Also, the football booster clubs bring in far more revenue from concessions, sponsors and ticket sales. Trump loves Soccer BTW.

high school soccer, like all other high school sports, are fun and part of the high school experience. just stop

No its not
The top players play basketball, football, run track
Top soccer players don't play hs

It is fun. Maybe not everyone is trying to becone a pro or even play in college. Maybe they just want to play on their high school team?

Are most of these McLean kids on top club teams?

Where would they play? Most HSes in FCPS only have one football field, and that field has to accommodate both boys and girls JV and varsity lacrosse and soccer in the spring.

There should be freshman teams or JV1 JV2. If Football can accomodate Freshman, JV and Varsity teams why can't they for soccer?
At a minimum, because there is so much demand, some schools should offer after school pick-up soccer or intramurals within their own schools. Set up pug goals and let the kids go at.it.

In the fall, there are freshman, JV and varsity football team. Girls Field Hockey is also in the fall. That's four teams to use the football. In the Spring, there are boys & girls JV/Varsity soccer & lacrosse. That's eight teams. There is not facility to accommodate JV1 JV2.

Wait, where did all these soccer players come from...I thought McLean was a Pickleball Powerhouse with almost 1,000 kids playing pickle ball!

McLean HS did win the pickleball championship.

Meanwhile, the schools they play against can barely put a team together because they are so small. That's what happens when you let the whole area go to one school without boundaries.

In private schools it's like that because there are some larger schools (1,000+) and then some schools where the HS is like 200 total kids or less...and co-ed. So the single sex 1,000+ school easily dominates the conference because the smaller schools have zero player pool. You get to hear they are so fabulous---but the conference is stacked so unfairly--of course goliath will beat a team where only a portion of the kids ever played the sport in club, or pretty much at all but are doing it for their 'pe or sport' requirement.

Because that's not how things work. Everybody doesn't get to play just because they "want" to

The government should stop subsidizing a privileged few soccer players. They can join a private a league.

No way taxpayer dollars should fund HS sports. Most people who tryout don’t get to play… but everyone has to pay!

Start with American football. Good luck!

Gustavo Borges played for St John’s so that is not true

Less girls play sports than boys. It's why most clubs have more boys teams than girls. The same thing occurs in other sports like basketball, baseball/softball

Not sure this is accurate. I think it’s probably b/c lacrosse is a spring sport for girls.

Does that mean we should shut down public schools? You privileged Mclean folks can go to private school. Your kid got cut, get over it.

They wanted to do this for middle school as well as if middle school open gym wasn't good enough for their kids. Good for FCPS to choose track and cross country which are no cut sports.

You have no idea if you’re responding to OP or anyone else from McLean. OP was just expressing surprise at the number of kids trying out this year.

It sucks to get cut but it also bodes well for the team’s prospects. I’d bet McLean HS has other sports where they don’t have as many kids trying out as at other schools.

Lacrosse is also a spring sport for boys
