It’ll pair well with my wegovy script to cancel out my hot pocket addiction.

Go away, moron.

It is criminal that this life saving drug can be made and sold at a tiny fraction of the price and that is not allowed.

Criminal? You can debate the costs overall, and that the branded versions should be less expensive. But being so dumb that you are unable to realize production costs don’t translate to value is remarkable.

Software scales free too. Should that also cost pennies? How much of your labor do you give away for free?

How dumb do you have to be that companies make astronomical profits on these life-saving drugs. It IS criminal. Biden capped the cost of insulin which was great. We should cap the cost on these drugs too. You are a hateful moron.

Burroughs Wellcome developed the first effective drug to be used for aids and the cost was beyond outrageous. It cost approx. $17,000 per year in 2017 dollars. They had gone from a privately owned company to public with stockholders and pretty much shut down a large part of the innovative research. This was not a new medication. It was one that had been researched years before and shelved as a possible cancer drug. There was nothing to justify that cost other than people's desperation.

Sure the pharma companies should make money off of their research but they have a long history of exploiting people who are helped by the medication. Go read about how profitable pharma companies are.

These companies are granted patents, to help them recoup their investments across all their R&D, not just the successful ones. Otherwise, no company would develop new drugs. What’s the point of someone is just going to steal their formulation?

It’s unfortunate that some people can’t afford the buy the branded drugs until they come off patent. That’s more of a public policy issue that a commercial one.

What's the markup on new drugs? How about profit margins?

Of course, there is a "markup' and "profit margin" on new drugs. Do you really think we could have a robust pharmaceutical R&D program without it? Why don't universities actually make drugs? (Hint, they have no money and no financial inventive to do so). Besides these drugs, what are the blockbuster drugs developed in Europe? In Asia?

You talk about profit like it's a dirty word. Please show me who is developing these drugs without the financial inventive.

Yes, I am aware they exist. I don't even disagree that they should make a profit. I asked you how much they are. Do you know the answer to that?

No, because most companies don’t keep track of profit on each drug the way you are asking. There are so many general costs that run through the whole company, failed projects, etc, not just one winner.

My question to you is - what is “modest” profit and why should a company that does something revolutionary only make a “modest” profit.

Oh can it. Some of these drugs are developed with govt funds and support. These companies also have found that by remarketing their existing drugs, they can make a lot of money without any research. These companies know how to maximize their profits with very little investment. Not everything involves long term deep research. I'll use Burroughs Wellcome as an example. They hired an astronaut to do commercials for the cold medication that had existed forever and it was so profitable the new stockholders stopped a lot of the new research.
