They categorizations are accurate labels so far as this years' go, so I am fine with it.

The problem is with the status of grants being obliterated now and going forward, research will grind to a halt. Almost no progress will be made in the coming years if the despots in power have it their way. What a bunch of craven tools.

Pretty sure W&M gets basically none of the funding that is being cut. They were ranked like #188 on the list JHU was #1 on...

Pretty sure almost all schools will be impacted. $33M of $82M (40%) of W&M research funding is federal per NSF data. This is probably significantly less than schools with medical and engineering programs, which get a large percentage of federal funding (particularly medical). UVA federal funding is close to 50%. Hopkins is 87%.

Just to show how significant medical-related federal research is, the #2 ranked school in R&D expenditures after JHU is the University of California San Francisco, which is only health science and entirely post-graduate. It has research expenditures equal to UVA + VT + VCU + GMU.

W&M doesn't have a medical school or an engineering school and isn't very big. It isn't easy to get to R1 from there even with the new standards. Wake Forest may be a similar school but has a medical school. $286M of its $309M R&D expenditures is in health sciences, so only $23M is outside of health sciences. W&M has $0 for health sciences, so all $82M is outside of health sciences.

Anyone who thinks W&M should be in the same research category as JHU or Harvard is an idiot.

Agree who would confuse a quality educational institution with a couple of tax dodging (at least for now) hedge funds.

Such bad educational institutions that they have better outcomes, orders of magnitudes more research opportunities and spending, better grad admissions rates, better reputations, better professors, more spending on instruction and innovative teaching grants, more spending on undergraduate opportunities, and-oh yeah- half the student:faculty ratio of W&M.

I can only assume people are stressed about layoffs and taking their frustration out in unseemly and unnecessary ways here.

It’s really weird that they are taking out all their anger on W&M.

How else would you describe someone who spends the middle of the work day ranting about a random college?
