College and University Discussion
...is this a serious comment? |
DP. "the way you believe what makes up an intelligent student body" sounds like sloppy word vomit. Do better. |
That has nothing to do with what we're discussing. Can you-"DP"-make a constructive argument instead? Do better. |
| Perhaps one of these newly anointed R1 Research Intuitions should conduct a study on parent pettiness on an anonymous forum? |
It sounds weird. Also there shouldn't be two "your"s in a row. |

| Moms who need hobbies, above ^^^^ |
Those are fine as marginal comments, but they actually aren't necessary for improving the sentence. You seem pretty annoying and picky if this bothers you. |
Improvement is almost never necessary. It's almost always beneficial. |
This is not true. There are necessary syntactic comments that are beneficial AND are important to improving your sentence structure. Marginal comments are mostly unnecessary gripes with style and are often wrong interpretations of how words sound in print versus spoken aloud. |
+10, mom's here grasp at straws when they can't combat an argument. It's a bit embarrassing. |
I'm not going to say anything... |
There's a distinct culture of being snarky meaning someone is "right." I don't know why people think the rest of us will be pleased to see most threads filled with grammar debates. |
| As a parent looking at schools with my dc, I am so tired of the marketing spin of 'research' being touted as a big benefit at every college presentation. I don't care if it's R1, R2, whatever. Enough already! It's become another element of buzzword bingo. Can't we just focus on undergraduate learning? And, now that I learned that my tax $$ are funding most of these university research labs, I want to ask for a tuition discount! |
Students are really into research and want a college that heavily supports it, on average. |
