+ 100000
Bolded 100%.. I’m sorry that for the first time in.. jeeze.. 50+ years(?) the federal bureaucracy and the “non-profot” raacket is being disrupted. Horrible timing if you work in this cartel currently… but a plurality of the country is tired of funding “non-profits” and “aid”. It has literally become a racket.

And spare me the “wELl SoFt PoWErOtHEr WIsE CHinA wILL tAKE OvEr”

Gurl, China was already funding all sorts of stuff as “aid” except they were smart enough to do this as predatory laons where when the third world countries inevitably default China will be able to create a modern silk-road.

While we in the U.S. have just done so much to earn “good will” with nothing on paper that we get in return..

Oh but the hundreds of NGOs and contractors the fed has funded, they’ve been VERRRRRRY happy until now.

LOL. The federal workforce costs $100B annually. USAID's annual budget is $40B. Our annual budget deficit is $1.8 TRILLION. We aren't in this position because Feds, NGOs, and contractors are getting fat. We're in this position because Americans are allergic to taxes and Republicans have successfully sold the lie that cutting them will unleash widespread prosperity that will actually increase tax receipts.

Next time just post "I'm mathematically illiterate," it'll save yourself, and everyone else, a lot of time.

+1. And right now, as the media fixates on federal employee firings, Republicans are hard at work trying to pass a budget that will give tax cuts to billionaires, and those tax cuts far exceed any savings from firing federal employees. The debt will grow as a result of those tax cuts.

Are you not able to understand that $100 billion is a lot of money? You may think it’s a drop in the bucket, and yes it’s a single digit in terms of % of the budget, but it still is $109 billion.

Responding with “LOL” about spending $100 billion is exactly why Trump won.

Trump is claiming he is cutting the federal workforce to balance the budget, which is in the trillions. Saving $100B in a $1.8T budget is like cutting Netflix out of your personal budget. What would you say to a Millennial balancing their budget by cutting Netflix?

You have a bit of a math impairment. It's 6%. Roughly sales tax. You can run a government on that.

Montgomery County is all going to lose all federal grants for transportation, law enforcement, etc. because our leaders decided to loudly make us a sanctuary county. So there’s also that.

We aren't. We neither impede nor aid federal immigration enforcement. ICE can't get to the jail on time to pick up released individuals because they only have 14 agents for the entire Maryland region.

Federal grants to police are infrequent, although they got about $1.7 million this year. Total police budget is $330 million and total jail budget is $85 million.

The bigger concern is how much will schools lose in grants. The way our budget is structured, we will have to cannibalize from all other departments to keep MCPS whole. Everything will suffer. Police, fire, HHS, transportation, environment.

The sad part is your executive is doing nothing to plan for this

This article above is five years old.
There are no more sanctuary cities or counties.
The county executive can be arrested for harboring illegals.

President Donald Trump signed an immigration order into law last week that gives Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents permission to enter places of worship and schools to search for undocumented immigrants.

The job losses in the DC metro area (both direct and indirect) from reducing federal employment by around 50% will be around 1 million. The total employment in the DC metro area is only around 3.36 Million. So the entire DC metro area will lose around 30 of the employment base if these nut jobs accomplish their goals. It will be a bloodbath and MD will be more severely impacted than VA. NOVA at least has a substantial number of ugly data centers to offset some of the losses to the local government tax base.

+1 MoCo has done so little to shore up its economy. Now it will pay dearly for that. Will go from bad to worse.

In addition to Musk blame Bezos for not choosing MoCo for Amazon2

DP. It isn't a $1.8T budget. It's a $1.8T budget *deficit* on a $7T budget.

$100B is 1.4%. So a better comparison would be a family cutting out their $100/month mobile phone service. Yes, it would save them a little bit of money, at least in theory, but it is going to be a very painful way to save a little money.

So unless we can find a single line item to fix the total deficit, we can't make any reductions in spending?

I would just like them to be done through legal processes. You know Congress has the power of the purse. If Doge can get Congress to reduce their funding, I would be fine with that.

No, but it is a reason to be judicious and thoughtful about spending/cuts, including the massive handouts to the rich that Trump wants to do while trying to eliminate programs that the kids and the working class rely on.
