As far as night travel is concerned, am I safer traveling to/from Baltimore or Dulles?

Seriously. Years ago, we were being driven home at midnight from flight at BWI in February and a naked homeless man wandered onto the road and the cabbie/Uber almost hit him. I still can't believe it happened.

You can go by metro.

Planes are a lot safer than metro.

You can take a plane from your house/office to the airport? Impressive.

Me too. I usually fly out or Dulles because we mostly fly internationally but my teen is going away for a weekend nationally in a week (first trip alone!), flying back at 9pm and we chose National over BWI (we live in CCDC) for convenience. Now i am livid, hopefully it is going to be safer for a few weeks at least. My sister is coming from overseas in three weeks and i recommended a flight with connection landing at National instead of Dulles. She called me the day adter the accident to “thank” me for recommending such a safe airport.

Aside from this accident (still mindblogging that military helicopters are apparently allowed to fly on the landing path of airplanes ) it really seems the airport is too crowded and tried to object to new flights being added but was overruled.

It will be Dulles from us from now on and i cant wait for my kid and my sister to land safely

It is the safer option. Much safer.

Well the skater who was refused a place for his dog on the plane in Wichita snd did not board the flight, drove back by car and is still alive, while his entire group of friends is being fished out of the Potomac as we speak. Even if flying is in general safer, National does not sound like a safe airport at this point

Baltimore County police have been hobbled with a “no chase” policy, even for violent carjackings.

Plus they now have so many other restrictions, they won’t help you and they don’t discourage crime anymore. Baltimore is dangerous gang territory.

Dulles is definitely the much safer option.

Have you actually been to Baltimore County? Much of it is pretty posh and very rural. I know anything with “Baltimore” in the title incites fear and hysteria, but really? Also, BWI is in Anne Arundel County.

I live equal distance from BWI and Dulles. Usually choose which one has the best time, route and fare. Surprisingly, United and IAD usually wins over BWI and Southwest, who loves to tout their “low fares,” but are often more expensive.

I grew up in Baltimore and I hate going to BWI but it’s not out of fear of crime. It’s nowhere near Baltimore City. It’s a $hit show to park there. Give me DCA any day. Or night.

Long term arming at BWI is terrible. The wait for the shuttle takes forever and it’s usually so crowded due to the infrequency. Daily garage at BWI is better. That said, I prefer Dulles.

Agreed.

Not sure this will be true anymore under this administration. I have several trips coming up and decided to drive whenever feasible. I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking that. Plane crashes are extremely tragic but typically seem like a rare anomaly. This one doesn’t feel that way.

The aviation industry is about to lose a lot of money due to this administration.

And Musk is encouraging air traffic controllers to quit, just like other Federal employees. Even though we have a life threatening shortage of air traffic controllers in this country.

There should be a way to have a recall vote.

Some if those who were asleep are waking up. But look at what you have wrought.

Or you could take a stats class. The absurdity of these fear emails defies logic and math.

Please stay away from Dulles, that is where I fly private from and don’t need your foolishness in close proximity!

Both BWI & Dulles are safe & have direct, limited-access highways leading to them. The real issue is the American Legion Bridge. It has accidents & overturned tractor-trailers almost every week. Which side of the river do you live on?

Well too little too late. Ya got your white guy. He told you what he was going to do.

Dulles has more acreage than most US airports. It has 4 runways, including 3 parallel long N/S runways which have good lateral spacing between them and a 4th (mostly E/W) shorter runway. It has lots of spare landing/takeoff slots for additional flights, rather than having every single slot allocated to some flight (as DCA does).

All of these factors make Dulles one of the easiest and lowest risk airports to land at or takeoff from.

That said, people are correct that one is much more likely to die in a car accident than in an aircraft accident, at least within the USA. (Nepal or Bhutan might be different, not sure.)
