Bad news for you: FCPS is doing it too. So the two largest systems in the area are doing it... maybe just suck it up like the rest of us.

Schools in Virginia must have 990 hours or 180 days. They don't need both. Maryland has both 180 days AND 1,080 hours required. That AND should be changed to OR so we wouldn't have this problem!

My highschooler came home, telling me that they did nothing in school today. He said the teachers were grading. That’s fine with me, they want to do movies and grade. Why don’t they do the same tomorrow so we don’t have an extended year? Even if it’s just a half-day.

This. I know it's not convenient, but you can't want teachers to take your students' late work AND not give teachers a grading day. The actual submission maybe takes an hour or two, because sometimes there are error messages we have to fix if there was a new student, or a student had something missing, or got a class switched. But we get pushed to take failing students' missing work last minute so they can pass. This is also the time teachers need to make recommendations for next year for all of our students. And no, teachers don't get asked our choice and plenty of us have vacations, jobs and other things planned too. There was no survey sent out as to what other day any of us preferred, parents or teachers, I hope that we can just make the best of it.

I agree that the late January day should just not be marked as a makeup day. But no one seems to be thinking about that when they are putting together the calendars.

What is your problem with the day being a professional day? How is this causing you incredible stress? That is something you can take up with your doctor. You can pay for daycare if that is your issue. If you don't like the schedule, please go to private school.

It’s not needed yet. We only have one day to make up so far.

The days are listed in the order in which they will be used. The June dates are always used first.
