MCPS calendar extended by one day to Monday June 16

We are new to MCPS and planned to travel that weekend. Can anyone explain what are the consequences if the child does not attend school?

They will need to repeat the grade next year.

None. If you care about their attendance record, write a note, if you don't, no one will be asking you why.

It makes more sense to cut into spring break

For all the moaning about camps, it is very easy to argue that MCPS has previous form for this in recent history and with only 2 days built into the calendar, this should have been expected. Signing up for stuff or a teacher taking a job starting 6/16 (sorry, what on earth were you thinking?) or camps not having any contingency plan was a known gamble that is now lost. And we're not even through January and this winter hasn't been kind so far. A half day on a Monday is absolutely stupid from a logical perspective but the camp argument doesn't move me.

This is such a bizarre comment. I'm sure folks will figure this out (I suspect high levels of absenteeism among students and teachers on June 16), but right now it is uncertainty and it does present a real, unavoidable challenge for those providers that operate in schools and which parents rely upon for childcare. That being said, those companies tend to be resourceful and flexible, unlike MCPS, so I'm not too worried.

I think make up days is a stupid idea. So there are 1-2 days less of school this year. Whatever. Time to move on

I will never understand why they dont do this. Make the day a conditional day and people can plan ahead. Spring break is already long enough--losing a day will mean nothing.

If MCPS were left to it's own devices they'd probably stop school in April. There is a law about this for a reason. MCPS could have scheduled more days in it's regular calendar, but they didn't. I have no sympathy for all they whining they are going to hear.

Everyone wanted a make-up day and now you've got one! It's your choice whether you wish to send your kids to school that day.

There are zero consequences.

Working parents need coverage the entire week--if MCPS isn't going to be open all week, they will have to sign up for camp. And everyone knows they won't extend to Friday. And there is no way I'm sending my kid to MCPS for a half day over camp.

Now they list potential makeup days, but skip all earlier ones and just add on to the end of the year instead of using them. They’re consistent in their inconsistency.

As recently as 2022, they used a makeup day in April.

So they may or may not follow their own written policy, and we have no way of knowing whether they will until they formally announce their plans. That’s inconsistent.

What written policy are you referring to?

+1 hopefully the local camps will adjust. If you need coverage you are presumably already enrolled in before/aftercare. Our provider has already said they will adjust and do before/aftercare on Monday and then start camps Tuesday, assuming the school year isn't further extended. NBD
