Ut Austin in state is not unusual at all- it’s auto if you are top 6 %. The same grades and rigor (all as except one b) that got her in Ut Austin worked at UF which I think is the most predictable college admission out there.
As far as UGA, yes merit. For her program, UT is not any better plus she wanted a slightly smaller school.

I thought Colgate was on par with Midd and Bowdoin (but am not an expert on LACs)

My kids was rejected at UF but would have chosen UGA over it (and attends). Was deciding between there and Wisconsin
A friend's son accepted at UT Austin and chose UGA.

Not to say it's better than either or not (UT Austin obv the "best") but you just never know.
