Alexandria HS on Lockdown- Massive Gang Brawl

Anonymous
The fights were gang related and planned as a meet up (they didn’t just spontaneously happen) similar to the after school gang meet up preplanned fight at Bradlee where the student was stabbed and died.

The kids all know which gangs were involved. Many came to watch because they knew about it beforehand.

Wake up people.

Just because you and others find all the loop holes to make sure your kid is okay in this environment doesn't make it right. But glad your kid got into UVA PP. All is well then.

What you are describing is life. It isn't unique to ACHS.

It’s not unique but this is not typical either.

It’s absurd to me that the school is struggling like this in an otherwise nice and expensive suburb. We are sending our child to private school but wish public was a better option , and may consider moving to Fairfax county for our child’s high school years

yeah, because this doesn't happen at WEPO, West Springfield, Lake Braddock, South Lakes...

I have taught at one of those for over 5 years, and only once has there been student on staff violence, and it was a cat B student with severe emotional disturbance issues. I can only think of one physical fight either. The level of violence described in the incident is terrifying to me as a staff member.

You have zero credibility if the narrative you're pushing is 'fights don't happen in high schools in Fairfax County'.

This is what equity looks like in Alexandria.

My kid will miss out on instruction because the city literally gives this scum free money.

So sad. It’s not like these kids will have anyone watching them so be careful at McDonalds etc. the next couple days.

It's the only public HS in the city, duh.

I'm aware. That's why a much higher percentage of people than would be typical in surrounding communities move at some point or send their kids to private school.

The ones who stay twist themselves into pretzels explaining it though. It's pretty fascinating.

I know a family who sends their kid there. They have a beach house too. Why not just pay for private. Priorities.

Don’t forget one student stabbing another to death a couple of years ago. I used to live very close to where that happened and I find the whole thing very disturbing.

That didn't happen at a school. It happened in a shopping center parking lot.

Keep reaching!

Wtf? What “reaching”? It was two students a block from the school on a school day at lunchtime. I can’t believe you’re trying to pretend one student killing another is normal.

You have the facts wrong. No one will enetertain you unless you have an accurate grasp.

What facts are wrong?

The private options aren’t great either. The DC privates are a tough commute and SSSAS has its own issues.

I'm beyond frustrated. My child is now missing an exam that he studied for, and cannot get the results of an election for a club leadership position that he is running for (was supposed to be announced today).
The city really needs to invest resources in expanding Chance for Change and offering more programs like Cornerstone Craftsmen for kids who do not want to be in traditional school, as well as counseling/support resources outside of school to try to help prevent this behavior. Yes, the kids who engaged in it do not belong in a traditional high school, and need to leave that setting, but they are still kids and something has to be done to give them some chance to turn their lives around and be productive members of society.

I guess my question is, though, is this really unique, or is this just unique in the sense that it is happening at a school where there is also a 35-30 percent population of affluent non-minority students? My BIL teaches at a school in a disadvantaged area in another city, and they do have issues like this regularly, though not as extreme as the stabbing incident in the parking lot - but tons of fights, disrespect to teachers, etc.

Where are all the people who wanted to remove police from schools? Crickets

Will police handle this appropriately? Heard this morning on the radio they are switching to online school, because of this! No words. Which gang(s) are these, if it’s gang activity? All need to be imprisoned or deported, enough! I’m really sorry, OP!

I used to teach at a VA school with gang activity. Students can go to a HS like this for four years and never be directly affected. It really depends on a lot of factors. Props to the Alexandria HS teachers, who can add this event to all the other stressful things they're dealing with this week.

Are they not affected when they are in hold and not attending the classes they're supposed to attend? Because that's what is happening today.

Easy, Karen. It's 1 hour for oner day. Or is your entire year ruined when you get caught in unexpected traffic?

No its not. In person classes have been cancelled today and tomorrow. Nice try downplaying this hot mess.

Will the city ever correct its errors and allow a second HS?

You think a second high school will stop this?! How and why? You need to get rid of the gangs!

Oh look another person downplaying the violence there was a MURDER and a shooting at a shopping center FEET from the school where ALL the kids hang out and where police and now security guards are posted 24/7. Like yesterday a bunch of cop cars there at 4 pm LITERALLY WAITING for the violence to start there from the school. No this is NOT normal.

Just today and tomorrow, though, right? Not for like the rest of the year or anything?
