What you are describing is life. It isn't unique to ACHS.

It’s not unique but this is not typical either.

It’s absurd to me that the school is struggling like this in an otherwise nice and expensive suburb. We are sending our child to private school but wish public was a better option , and may consider moving to Fairfax county for our child’s high school years

yeah, because this doesn't happen at WEPO, West Springfield, Lake Braddock, South Lakes...

It only took a couple hours for this comment to age poorly.

I used to teach at a VA school with gang activity. Students can go to a HS like this for four years and never be directly affected. It really depends on a lot of factors. Props to the Alexandria HS teachers, who can add this event to all the other stressful things they're dealing with this week.

What else are they dealing with this week?

Ummmm….. let’s see. I’ve got: teaching high school. Teaching high school the week before winter break. Dealing with teenagers. Dealing with an often-dysfunctional school system. You know… stuff.

Videos all over social media. My middle schooler who doesn’t even go to AC showed me some and others are posted on the Bring Integrity FB page.

My neighbor’s kid and her friend got caught up in the shuffle because they were in the hall (possibly standing around to watch or whatever). It’s gang related. The SRO knocked out is a woman.

I have taught at one of those for over 5 years, and only once has there been student on staff violence, and it was a cat B student with severe emotional disturbance issues. I can only think of one physical fight either. The level of violence described in the incident is terrifying to me as a staff member.

Don’t forget one student stabbing another to death a couple of years ago. I used to live very close to where that happened and I find the whole thing very disturbing.

That didn't happen at a school. It happened in a shopping center parking lot.

Keep reaching!

In person classes were then cancelled for the remainder of the year as a result of the student’s murder. It’s really odd to try to keep brushing these things off or act like it didn’t impact the school community because it happened at the Bradlee Center where many go to socialize after school.

Even if your child didn’t witness the most recent fight first hand, it is absolutely horrifying to know that school security and staff were physically injured and assaulted. Yes, I do care and will not minimize such egregious violent conduct.

Well a year or 2 before that a senior (who was being recruited for football at several colleges) was arrested at school for the murder of 2 people. Then he bragged about it on social media. He is serving FOUR life sentences.

This is looking at it the wrong way, IMO. Instead of asking "why do parents send their kids to a school with a lot of violence and issues, those people must suck" the question should be "why are public schools with a high population of students from disadvantaged economic backgrounds facing a lot of violence and issues?"

No dad at home to teach these young men by example how to self regulate?

You mean the shopping center that is practically a part of the school because it’s in the path students travel from campus to campus?
There are fights and a huge police presence there around once a month if not more.

As a TC Williams grad (96) this makes me so sad and angry. The school has always had its challenges due to its size and mix of students.

Yes, high achieving kids in AP classes (mostly white UMC) are generally ok. I was one of those kids and you rarely interact with the rest of the student body outside of lunch, gym, etc.

But so much happens in transitions - in hallways, bathrooms, locker rooms, etc.

I lived in ALX for over 30 years but moved to FFX once my kid was in kindergarten. He started 1st grade in FCPS.

Worst he’s seen is a fight that took place in hallway between 2 kids and that was quickly broken up

We moved when my oldest was in K too and my kids are teens now. They have seen plenty of fights in FCPS, mostly in middle school. Both of my kids have witnessed several and both have showed me some violent videos. The difference is that no one ever got transported to the hospital, no one died and nothing was ever that serious to trigger a lockdown, a news article or close school. Their experience in FCPS has definitely been safer.

This is what equity looks like in Alexandria.

My kid will miss out on instruction because the city literally gives this scum free money.

This doesn’t make any sense and you sound hella racist.

School was closed for 2 weeks because it was gang related. And those gangs departed the school to then fight and kill someone. Do you really think it was not school-related? In the videos one assailant is wearing a Canada Goose jacket. These are organized criminal elements. And because we are obsessed with progressive bona fides we act like social workers will make this all better. Alexandrians get what we vote for - and alas here we are.

Lots of parts of it are not nice and expensive. So many kids in the high school are on free and reduced lunch that everyone just gets it.

The city is nice, but city council bends over backwards on progressive missions recruit people who can't afford to live here. Increased development without proper resource allocation like building new school. Subsidied everything, affordable housing. Why? Even the programs to educate students from these socioeconomic backgrounds cost more money and tank the schools ratings. What does a tax paying homeowners get out of this arrangement? Umm canceled school. Wake up everyone. Tell elected officials we are paying attention and want a change.

Really, did they really close?

Our elected city leaders have their priorities all wrong. Why do they bend over backwards spending our tax dollars on subsidies and grants to keep people living in this expensive city who can't afford to live here and don't properly parent their children!

Yes it’s really closed and kids have a ton of tests before break (or were supposed to).

It’s admitting they have no handle on the situation and no plan either.

This is awful!
