Does weight loss medication take the joy of eating away?

Anonymous
It’s helped me stop after one normal sized plate. I can also do one meal a day but try to do three. I very little desire to snack. I have no desire to drink. I can have a glass of wine with a meal or appetizers and I’m done. I drink about once a month now instead of every weekend. Down 34 pounds since August so I’m happy.

I'm wondering if "feel guilty simply enjoying a decent portion of good, healthy food" is what makes PP "uncomfortable." The tone here sounds like she's jealous of their weight loss and wants to justify her own eating.

Np. Not everything is jealousy. I am guessing it’s similar to being around someone on an overly strict diet who either glares at you while you eat or makes comments about “I could never eat en entire chicken breast”.

Agree that not everything is jealousy.

But people who make comments like PP? Yeah, that's usually from a place of jealousy.

- Not jealous of their weight loss (and don’t need to lose weight myself). I am genuinely happy for them, but it hasn’t made them any happier as people.

OMG I wish you could hear yourself. You are so judgy and negative -- and clearly not genuinely happy for them. My guess is that you probably don't understand their struggle at all (since you made a point of saying you don't need to lose weight) and have felt superior to them because you were not overweight...and now they are slimming down.

And complaining that their weight loss makes you uncomfortable eating a meal, like it's a hardship for you or something? As someone on the meds, I can promise you they do not care. And why is it necessary to find another negative and say they aren't happy? Just stop. Let those of us on the meds live our lives and make our informed decisions with our doctors. It's not about you.

I am PP and meant to add, to answer the original question -- I haven't lost my joy at all, it's just so much better in every way - I have joy at not wanting to gorge myself, and joy at being able to treat myself occasionally without the tremendous guilt.

I am also many months in, and as a result almost all of the side effects have dissipated.

Well honey that’s not what it’s for. Some people were miserable fat and they will be miserable skinny. I had to join those online Reddit groups to learn about how to successfully take the weight loss medication, and I can see that a lot of those people have opted to do therapy and serious work on their eating issues in addition to the medication. Other people won’t do it and that’s a personal choice. I can say they were probably unhappy fat and it’s probably healthier for them to be unhappy skinny.

Oops! You lost immediately and then wasted your time typing the rest of your post.

I am on it and have lost 40 pounds. I did not do this to be happy. I did it to lose weight, and be healthier. I had several weight related illnesses that are much better now. That prior poster just can’t admit how jealous they are and they’re twisting themselves into knots trying to deny it.

Just keep telling yourself that.

(not the PP to whom you’re referring)

Wegovy makes you less hungry - controls and qwells and desire to want to eat.

I have remind myself to eat..

As for side effects .. Sulfur type burps and somewhat of an upset stomach.

I’m just about at my GW and only use it once a month ..

What is your dose? Do you get sick using it only once per month?

My current dose is 1 mg.
I get nauseous -- however doctor prescribed Zofran. I take that about an hour before using Wegovy

My experience with semaglutide is that physical reactions to the drug aren’t a straight trajectory. Sometimes I love a drink or small dessert, other times I have no interest. It isn’t strictly tied to when I take a dose or up the dosage. Whether “not interested” dovetails with a restaurant outing with friends is unpredictable.

I know many people who drank too much and it helped curb that for them. They are in a much healthier place with alcohol. I drink maybe once a month and that hasn't changed for me.

This is true .. don't care for alcohol much while on Wegovy..

I am so interested in this thread. I’m about 40 pounds over the weight I want to be, and 25-30 over where the doctor would probably suggest I be. I have so many questions:

1. How did you get your doctor to prescribe it? Did you have to bring it up?

2. Is there one that’s “better” than the others if you want to avoid constipation?

3. Do you feel full faster? Or just do t have interest in eating?

4. If you are feeding a family (of 5 for me) how do you manage that? Are you grossed out by it all?

5. Do these meds ever NOT work? Do you just try a new one if that happens?

6. Do you know anyone who has gone off one of these drugs and managed to keep the weight off?

Thanks!

OP here- update on my second week of Tirzepatide. Starter dose is 2.5. I was really tired and felt off on week one but feel fine on week 2. I have lost 3 lbs in 2 weeks. I still enjoy eating-My taste buds are the same- I enjoy flavor of food but feel a little less hungry and don't have urge to snack. I will be going to 5mg in 2 weeks.

I brought it up with my doctor. My BMI was normal but I had put on 15lbs once hitting peri-menopause. She was happy to prescribe based on that

I am on wegovy and haven’t tried others. There was a pill weight loss drug (maybe duromine?) that she also mentioned but said that it often makes people anxious - I have had anxiety in the past and didn’t want that.

I feel full faster but also don’t really think a lot about food anymore. I find it freeing. I don’t get grossed out making family meals at all

A friend of mine was on Ozempic and she said it stopped working. She is now trying mounjaro. I understand that these are drugs you need to stay on your whole life or the weight comes back

Thank you!! This is great. I'm going to bring it up with my doctor. I do hope it would be covered by insurance...

1. How did you get your doctor to prescribe it? Did you have to bring it up?

My doctor brought it up at my annual physical last spring. I wasn’t too sold on the idea, but when my A1c came back at 5.6, which is on the border of prediabetes, I decided I would try it.

2. Is there one that’s “better” than the others if you want to avoid constipation?

No. GI side effects, including constipation, are going to be common with this kind of medication given what it does to your gastrointestinal system. It has been pretty bad for me TBH. A couple of times I thought I would have to go to urgent care. It was pretty bad, but I dealt with it myself. Which I probably shouldn’t have. Sorry if this is TMI, but you were asking about it. And fwiw, some never experience constipation at all.

3. Do you feel full faster? Or just do t have interest in eating?

Both.

4. If you are feeding a family (of 5 for me) how do you manage that? Are you grossed out by it all?

It’s only DH and I. He has had to stop making the frozen burritos he loves because I just can’t with the smell. I also hate the smell of his morning, coffee, but I’m not gonna take that away from him, lol. I don’t have a problem cooking anything though.

5. Do these meds ever NOT work? Do you just try a new one if that happens?

I have heard of this happening, yes. But I think it works for most people. I have only tried Wegovy, and it worked right away for me. I’ve been on it since April, and have lost about 45 pounds. And I’m not even up to the most therapeutic dose, because it works for me and I’ve had side effects so no reason to go up in dose.

6. Do you know anyone who has gone off one of these drugs and managed to keep the weight off?

No. The research seems to show that people gain it back. You will hear a lot of people saying “I haven’t gained it back! And that’s because I learned how to maintain a healthy lifestyle!!” but then you find out that they have only been off the medication for six months. My doctor told me that obesity is a chronic condition, and I will be on the medication for life. Otherwise the weight will come back. But there does not seem to be a settled standard of care with regard to this. Some people‘s doctors are telling them something else. And of course, the insurance companies are not going to want to continue to pay for it. We will see how it shakes out with regard to standard of care.

Thanks!
