Daycare mandating masks for 2+

My older daughter didn’t even have to wear a mask until she turned 3 during Covid and I have really mixed feelings about this.

We just started at this daycare after 18 months on the waitlist and I’m having second thoughts - except I don’t know that we’ll get in anywhere else now. I was never against masking during the pandemic and still wear one to travel but 2 seems way too young. WWYD?

Wow you are a horrible human being

Omg this is ridiculous put the mask on your kid or change schools to one that doesn’t give a crap about the kids

Masking toddlers does nothing. Please try to keep up.

There’s exactly ZERO medical evidence for forcing toddlers to mask up. ZERO.

In fact it can be harmful, due to insufficient oxygen.

That's total bs. It's 2024 catch up on your covid reading. Masks do NOT deprive oxygen! Liar.

Link please?

Well, no, not that reason. But WHO specifically says kids 5 and under should not be required to mask.

Actually, that's not completely correct:

In general, children aged 5 years and under do not need to wear masks. However, there may be times when caregivers will choose to put a mask on a child – for example, if the child has contact with a person who is at a high risk of developing severe disease or is around someone who is ill. Children of this age should not wear masks for a long duration or without supervision.

You don't know if another adult or child has serious health issues in that school or classroom.

It doesn't say that your toddler should mask if my toddler is close to someone with health issues. In that case, it's my responsibility to take precautions for my child.

Being exposed to typical germs -- in this case, a runny nose -- is how toddlers build their immune systems. Plus, many viruses aren't airborn and hand washing is more important.

That’s actually not true. The last paragraph is incorrect. I’m sorry. Many viruses are airborne, and immune systems don’t need to be “built”, they simply ARE. Viruses bring damage, sometimes lasting, to us.

Someone skipped immunology class. It's called adaptive immunity or the acquired immune system.

Crawl back to 2020, please. Sleeping with your mouth and nose obstructed is unsafe.

There is no need to make this a big deal Karen. Put a mask on your child FFS.

True. Though I think this reasoning for not masking is displaced, because little kids don't wear masks well and many masks don't even fit them well so they are ineffective. Therefore the kid will still be exposed to illness.

But let's say they are a little bit effective (which is questionable). They might have a benefit in terms of getting exposed to viruses but getting a lower "dose" of the viruses, so you don't get as sick. Getting sick is still bad! If your body can fight it off without you getting very ill, that's a GOOD thing.

The problem is that everyone, but especially little kids, benefit developmentally from seeing their peers' and their teachers' faces. And masking even in older kids has at best a marginal impact on illnesses. I continue to be appalled that neither the CDC nor the AAP have aligned themselves with the WHO's very reasonable guidance on masking young kids.

Another troll from 2020/2021. Please tell us about your time machine. How does it work? Did it impact your cognitive functioning (oh nevermind, the answer is clearly yes).

It's pretty obvious. Compare the volume of air that is between your face and the mask, and the volume of air that you breathe in. Most of the air you're breathing needs to come from outside the mask.

I would question how long this policy will be in place (until spring?). My daugter wore masks at age 3/4 during COVID, and they have been a bit effective, but I would be surprised at this as a mandatory policy in a daycare in 2024.

For those who say covid isn't so bad for kids, I'm not sure we really know the long term effects. But I also don't think we have a hope of protecting them from it, or at least, the sacrrifices required to do so are not worth it for my kid.

RSV and flu each kill more kids than COVID.

Isolation is horrible for kids. Masking isn't awesome either and should be reserved for emergencies.

How many of the daycare workers are going unmasked to parties and clubs on the weekends? Acting like putting 2 year olds in soggy, droopy paper masks (while removing them to eat and nap presumably) is doing anything at all to affect overall infections is just really dumb. I would honestly question the overall competence of the daycare trying to implement this. If I had no other options I’d just wholly ignore it.

There are a disturbing number of people who work with kids (and claim to post on DCUM) who think of them as basically evil snotty germs. I get it a little - toddlers and early elementary school kids will unapologetically cough in your eyeballs. Kids spread germs really well.

But you work with kids! Just like when you chose to parent kids, chosing to work with them means chosing to build up your immune system to the things they will cough at your face. We all have done it and once you're at it for more than a year your immune system will be pretty awesome. So...deal.

But that's how all those people justify unmasked hanging out with adults.
