Really. I didn’t know Atlanta had found a way around the laws of statistics. That is indeed news. |

If I were the OP, I would definitely stay away from team sports, and put him in golf. He is going to be successful in golf REGARDLESS of his weight or height. Last time I checked, Rory Mcilroy, Colin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Brian Harman are major champions and all of them is under 5"10. |
I think you are joking, but the kid isn't even going to be short though. Mom is 5'6" and dad is 6'3". He is 8! He is currently small just like ALL 8 year olds. |
Most people hold back spring and summer in Buckhead. Buckhead is not the same as other areas in Atlanta. This year was also unprecedented due to Covid. It was the 2020 Kinder year. Almost everyone who could reasonably hold their kids back did. You can argue what you want but there are very few kids born after January. It wasn’t a normal year. |
| His size won’t be a factor that holds him back by high school but he will be on the later size for growth and puberty compared to his classmates. Hes still doing what he loves but golf would be something that he could easily do even if he didn’t make a team. That is a good idea. Thank you. |

+1 to travel baseball. My June baby is finally one of the older kids. We started at 9U. Some kids start older, but I think the longer you wait the harder it is to get on an established team.
If you don’t do it early on then focus on doing well getting up to Majors in rec (goes ages 9-12ish) and then try out for travel around age 13 because that is when they move up to the bigger field and switch from the 9U-12U programs to the 13U + teams. |
The dynamics in Buckhead is really no different than that dynamics in northern Virginia/suburban Maryland. High income, do whatever you need to do to make sure your kids get ahead. We are all speaking from experience, but you don’t seem to want to hear it. Birthday does not matter in the grand scheme of things. It might put him ahead and boost his confidence when he’s young, but once he’s 12/13/14 makes no difference. |

OP, I'm the PP who initially suggested travel baseball. My son has similar percentiles as your son and I can tell you that even as the youngest on his baseball team, he's always been one of the biggest kids (but size does NOT equate to skill level by any means).
However, there are also always outliers on travel teams, whether they are older kids who waived down onto a younger team or correctly-aged kids who are just physically big. My son is 6' at 14 but there are often at least several 6'+ kids on each team he's faced, if not teams that seemingly recruit for size. |
I think parents really only notice if their child is younger. I can see how you might overlook this if your child wasn’t in the situation. |
lol no. Even in precious Buckhead. |
Did you think it was beneficial to have an older birthday when you made the switch to the travel team? |
Do you have a child in this grade? It’s the reality. Ask any teacher in this grade if you actually live in Buckhead. |

OP, if you're in fact a real person from Atlanta, I recommend you ask your peers and not a DC-area board where redshirting Jan birthdays isn't commonly done.
However, I believe you. I'm from NC and absolutely have friends who have redshirted kids with winter birthdays. It does tend to be private school kids where I'm from though. |
Thanks. I think it’s a regional thing but maybe it isn’t very common in the DMV. I’m not really interested in arguing about that. We don’t have a board in Atlanta that I’m aware of. We relocated from DC and I still follow this board until we have something similar. |
