He plays multiple sports but all the ones he plays are grade based and right now he’s significantly younger than most of the kids. The older kids tends to get better positions and play more. That’s just how it is, especially at this age with 2 year groups and you have an 8 year old and an 11 year old.

It sounds like your son is significantly bigger than average, so the fact that he is often the youngest shouldn’t be such a big deal. I don’t really understand what you are so concerned about, honestly.

Plus. He’s 8. Who cares who plays what position right now?

The guy is listed as 6’3”. I don’t buy for a second that he was ever “the smallest”.

He likes almost all sports and plays 3 grade level ones already (lax, flag and basketball) so I want one option that is age based since many kids are already a full year older so it’s not as much of an issue to keep up.

We are in the south in a very wealthy area so this is the norm. I’m not interested in debating about this, just want some positive suggestions of things that worked out for your kids in a similar situation.

You might have to drive a bit more, or your kid might not know anyone else on the team. But if he wants to play, you will be able to find a team that will take him, just so they can cash your check.

Hopefully he will make the school teams but we will do this if there aren’t other options.

Where do you live? Cause I’ll tell you in the DMV area He’s not making a high school team if he hasn’t been playing travel.

It’s discussed about him frequently in articles. He was 5’5” as a freshman.

LOL. Then that has absolutely NOTHING to do with him having an April birthday! Just your classic late bloomer.

IOW OP’s concerns are fairly ridiculous.

And more of a reason a parent might have had him reclass.

He's not big. He is average with his classmates. Maybe it shouldn't matter but the kids do care by this age which position they get selected for. They all want the same ones and they notice if they spend more time on the bench.

Maybe, but a lot of kids in his situation just end up dropping out. I would rather he stay busy and active in some other activity than get discouraged and just quit because he doesn't make the team or get any playing time.

+1

This is the heart of what we're trying to tell this parent. Age/birthday does not matter. Either they have athleticism or they don't. They can try hard, get ahead by cheating the birthday for a few years, but it all comes down to hard work, grit and athleticism.

If it's an exceptional athlete that might be the case. I'm the OP and my kid doesn't fall into this category. He's fine but he will never be at the top for athletics but he really enjoys playing and it's a big part of his identity.

Golf might be a good option.

Yeah, no. I know Atlanta. No way — I mean truly no way — are 90% of kids who play sports redshirted from January. You are literally living in a fantasy.
