What would you advise your kid (recruited athlete or roll the dice)

You do know that big boys can ask for input and advice, right?

I always ask trusted family members for advice about big decisions…maybe try it…

Ba, strangers on dcum know nothing about how much you kid likes each school or even what the schools are. You’ll get zero meaningful advice here on this question.

Of course it reads like a troll post anyway. So garbage in, garbage out.

Except my original post said exactly how the kid felt about the school (liked it) and an ivy (loved it).

- def not a troll- what makes it read like a troll post?

I don't know...numerous people have asked if it's a D3 or a D1 school which matters quite a bit...yet you have never once answered the question.

Even that little bit of information is quite useful.

OP, I think people think it's a troll post because people love to hate on recruited athletes. They also love hating on people who think their kid can get into an Ivy league school, so it's like a double troll topic!

I am one of the people who asked if your DC has reached out to the coach at the Ivy they like. Have they? Because you might be surprised. Ivy coaches need athletes just like non-Ivy coaches. But the pool they can pull from is more limited. So they love to hear from high-stats kids.

So, can you answer that question?

It is D3, so no money and none is needed (meaning it isn’t a factor in the consideration.

I didn’t respond about “why not see if an ivy is interested” only bc I already said that the kid is not recruitable by an ivy.

So, it's Emory/WashU/Chicago/NYU vs. an Ivy. Correct?

I would just delve into what they like about the Ivy vs. one of these schools. While an Ivy is D1 sports, they have increasingly lost the sports culture. That's a big difference from 20 years ago.

I will say that UAA sports recruiting is much closer to D1 recruiting vs. other D3 schools. They provide likely letters and the coaches (my experience) tell you that you either apply ED or you lose your spot...they have enough kids interested, that they just move onto the next kid. Always possibility of walking on which is increasingly not an option for an Ivy or any D1 due to the recent NCAA settlement.

Ah, I missed that kid is not recruitable by the Ivy. That is tricky. I will say, if you're assuming that, then don't - but if you already know that's the case this is a hard situation. One thing that is surprising is that D3 schools typically recruit much later. My kid (Ivy recruit starting next year) also talked to several D3 schools. All said they were happy to talk to him and to keep in touch, but that they really didn't amp up recruiting until Spring junior year or even Fall senior year. So, I do think you may be able to squeeze out time to make this decision, which is at least helpful. If they're pressuring him to make a decision, that seems out of character/sequence for D3.

I am not seeing where you said this. In your original post, you said kid is likely not recruitable by a school ranked lower than #20. Ivys are generally not athletic powerhouses. So, the question still remains. Did they reach out to the coach at the Ivy? If no, this seems the logical next step.

It's actually that Ivy schools are now recruiting much more like other D1 schools and recruiting earlier.

Used to be that Ivies would fill like 50%+ of a freshmen class with recruits during the Summer after junior year (for baseball at least). Now, Ivy schools have recruited 80%+ by the end of Junior year. Fall Junior year is now the prime time for Ivy recruiting.

One thing I find odd is you will see kids "committing" to NESCAC schools the summer after Sophomore year. I saw two kids publicly announce, with some leading Showcase organizers also trumpeting their commitments. Never saw that for D3 schools before.

Ivies are definitely hard to get in for athletes in definable sports: Golf, swim, etc. yes, kid has reached out to the ivies.

Not recruitable lower than that has to include every single ivy.

I think it's confusing semantics. I think of "lower" than #20 as 21+ - I define higher as 1-19. So higher ranked is lower numbers and vice versa. I see what you mean now. I'm sorry Ivy coaches didn't bite. I'm guessing it's swim, but may be wrong. I know Ivys are strong there.

This is definitely a troll post or a humble brag. Op rejects all advice given and there really is nothing of import anyone can say without knowing the sport, and the set of schools.

What makes me put it solidly in the troll pile is nearly all D3 recruiting occurs in the summer before senior year, yet op is claiming to have received a D3 offer a whole year earlier.

For that matter, how realistic is it that kid would have several national awards at this point in junior year.

OP here: these awards are exactly why the application will stand out in a good way. The awards are definitely not the norm. As for the offer, it is definitely contingent on a preread now, and as I said in the original post, a second one at the end of jr year.

I also have not rejected all advice. I rejected the suggestions to try and recruit thru an ivy bc that won’t work. I also rejected not giving my kid my thoughts when asked for them.

I accepted:

- make sure it is kid’s choice
- consider taking a good offer asap so it is not lost
- consider: don’t take a good offer too soon bc the kid could definitely get into a great school
- consider how hard and indefinite admissions are and go with a more sure thing

I think those are all good points, the last three are not only why I posted (bc I see it both ways) but also why the answer is probably not clear cut to my while either.
