For those with kids already in college - how many applications v. acceptances?

Shotgunning worked for my kid. But you have to do the work. Each app should be heavily tailored.

7 out of 10 acceptances. Rejections were reaches based on low % of OOS accepted by those publics.

2 out of 5 acceptances. The rejections I thought would not be a reach because of willingness to do summer entry, and a hook for a unique major.

Overall, never wished for my kids to have no rejections. Didn't want that, not if the point was to spare them from rejection.

Merit aid was all over the place. Happy result. But never would have been able to anticipate it

Does this mean your kid only applied to one school ED without any backups? Or does it mean they applied ED with the intention of later applying to other schools ED2 or RD? My understanding is that it’s best to apply EA/RD to other schools as a backup to ED1.

Applied to 20:

Reaches: Applied to 10 (R at 3 (incl ED); A at 3; WL at 4)
Targets: Applied to 5 (A at all)
Likelies: Applied to 5 (A at all)

Attending an Ivy (reach).

I wish PP could share their kid’s stats.

Kid 1
Applied for 14, 9 reach/ultra reach, 2 target, 3 likely. Accepted to 3 ultra reach (T10/Ivy), both targets, only 2 of 3 likely.
Kid 2 -- 7 of 8. In at ES ultra reach, 1 target and 5 likelies pulled 8th app for ED.

Both public school unhooked

High achieving DC from last year: 13 apps and much more success than anticipated.

Admitted (10)
-1 Ivy (5%)
-1 Ivy+ (10%)
-2 WASP SLACs (7-8%)
-2 highly selective SLACs (8-15%)
-3 selective SLACs (18-30%)
-1 true safety (80% acceptance rate) EA

Waitlisted (2)
-1 Ivy (5%)
-1 moderately selective SLAC (20-30%)

Denied (1)
-1 WASP SLAC (7-8%) ED

No real regrets. Maybe should have put in an app to Stanford, which still would have been unlikely. But, truth be told, I think DC's chosen school is a better fit than Stanford anyway.

Nothing was a given - she was on the edge of 4 year vs community college. We were surprised by a state school not offering her direct admission-they offered her a bridge program instead which was pointless as the particular school did not offer housing as part of the program.

She wound up at a small school in MA that is known for its programs for neurodivergent kids. Despite a rocky first month, she seems to be doing well now. It seems like her perfect fit

Would love to hear more about this college.

Glad it's going well!

I think 7. One ED. Maybe one was a reach. Then some targets. A few safeties. She got in ED with big merit yay! She’s very happy so far.

Class of 2024, 9 apps (5 acceptances, 2 rejections, 2 withdrawn)

5 reaches, including ED1 (rejected) and ED2 (accepted); rejected by 1 EA; withdrew from other 2 RD after ED2 acceptance

1 target (accepted EA with top merit)

3 safeties (accepted EA at all, with merit and/or honors)

DC 2024 8 total: 3 reaches (1 accept, 2 rejects), 4 targets (2 accept, 2 WL), 1 safety (1 accept). Attending the reach which was #2 choice.

Why apply to any reaches?

PP here. Adding some context.

DC 2021: 3 reaches were T25s (all rejects), target was a T25 with a legacy hook (hence choice #1) and a T40 (WL), safeties were VT (business) and Pitt (accepts). We thought legacy would help make the reach a target, and we surmised correctly.

DC 2024: 3 reaches were T25 (including one with a legacy hook, rejected, reject at another, accept at one), 4 targets were 2 T25s (including one with a legacy hook, rejected, WL at the other T25, accepts at the 2 T50s), safety was Pitt. The hooks didn't work for DC 2024, but still wound up at at T25.

2 kids in college. One was in the middle of covid. 8 or 9 applications. 3 acceptances. One reach. Average stats kid

Second kid (sophomore) high stats. I think 10 applications. One rejection-reach school although they were accepted into the program where you go to a community college for a year then guaranteed acceptance Sophomore year (USC). Kid declined.

I don’t know exactly how many they applied to since I had nothing to do with the application process I’m just going by the ones they talked about. They could have applied to more and I don’t know.

DD, Class of 2024

8 applications, 8 acceptances

1 reach
4 targets
3 safeties

Solid A-/B+ kid. Mostly state universities. Received merit from half

12 applications FOUR acceptances but we did lots wrong.

1 reach 1 safety 1 likely. Got into 2 including the reach ED. Withdrew for the likely once ED acceptance came

I will happily talk about it I have mentioned it on the board before. It’s called Dean College. Tiny school in Franklin, MA. Well known for both their services for kids with learning differences AND their performing arts departments, which is why it is a lovely fit for my ADHD dancer. She struggled so much in traditional huge high school post Covid-just never got the hang of it. We really worried about whether she would actually graduate, quite honestly. She managed to squeak through and we took a leap of faith sending her. We know she is going to class, we know she is meeting with her EF coach/advisor person, she claims to be getting ok grades. Yes, she needs some coddling, which we are paying for and are ok with. But she likes her classes and seems excited about what she is learning. She’s currently a dance major, but also adding on exercise science as either a double or dual major (they offer AA degrees, as they started as a junior college). They have classes that are required for everyone which are career focused, and they require at least one internship for all students. They know and cater to the students they attract. Kind of a niche school, but as I said, it is what my daughter needed.
