What this tells me, if your goal is a selective reach, apply to at least 10 if not more reaches.

3 WL (Princeton, 2 T30s)

Why did you give details on the types of schools for all categories except the 4 rejections?

2024

16 applications

2 safeties - accepted 2
5 targets - accepted 5
9 reaches - accepted 5, rejected 3, waitlisted 1

Attends an Ivy now.

In retrospect, too many applications.

He was auto accepted to a safety school, which is where he would have gone if he did not get into his choice school.

Shotgunning helps the most with schools where you have a competitive profile. Sometimes it is hard to know how good your profile is...so you don't know where to aim.

Applied to 11, accepted to 8, WL at 3.

Reaches: WL at 2, accepted at 1 (attending)
Targets: WL at 1, accepted at 3

Merit offers with all 8 acceptances except for our in-state public (UMD)
