Alsobrooks Hogan debate

The thing to know about Hohan is that he doesn't want to be a senator-- he wants to be president. He's only running for Senate because it's the current path available to him.

He won't become an independent be abuse he can't win a presidential race as an independent.

He won't actually denounce Trump or do anything to oppose him in the senate because he will need MAGA votes to win a presidential race. He'll refuse to ensure Trump because he knows a full-throated endorsement would torpedo him in MD but he won't cross the aisle to support Harris (the only plausible way to actually prevent a Trump presidency) because it could jeopardize his MAGA support when he runs for president in 2028.

Hogan is no different than people like JD Vance, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio-- he might find Trump personally distasteful but as a Republican he will never actually stand up to him because he both fears and needs Trump's base for his political aspirations. They are all a bunch of craven opportunists.

Alsobrooks is not perfect, no one is. But she actually wants to represent Maryland in the US Senate and her positions on key national issues (the Senate is a national politics role) are more in line with those of most Marylanders than Hogan or Trump, and another Dem in the debate makes it harder for them to push through their super-right-leaning anti-choice judicial candidates.

I will be a split ticket for Harris and Hogan. AA has not shown me she would be the best advocate for our state

What advocacy for our state so you need?

You must not care about national level policy issues.

Why should I care about people in other states?

That’s maybe the most un-American thing I’ve read on the internet in years, and that’s really saying something.

You mean other than all the things said by Trump and his MAGA cult, right?

Don't tread on me.

However putting Hogan in the Senate will shift the balance and I don’t think he will be able to get anything done. He’ll go from having a lot of power as gov. to having very little power in the senate.

He keeps saying he’ll do what’s right for MD. On most issues that would mean voting against his party.

Hogan should pack his carpetbag pull a Hillary and go win his seat in a R state.

Maryland is solidly blue, but it’s not a terribly progressive state, more moderate Democrats. It will be interesting to see how many of them will vote for Hogan out of protest since they already know that the state will go to Harris. It reminds me of how the polls failed to really capture Trump support in 2016.

Your claim here is that Democrats will vote for Hogan out of protest against Democrats.

Angela Alsobrooks is not a progressive Democrat. She's a basic, moderate Democrat. I think that people who say "Angela Alsobrooks is too liberal for me" are actually objecting to other things about her.

This should be the title of a new book.

It’s actually not going to be close. Alsobrooks will get about 54%, hogan 44%, and the usual 2% voting for random people.

She will likely win, but Hillary Clinton was up 5-7 just before the election, too. We will find out shortly.

No one said that. They might vote for Hogan out of protest of other things happening because they are provided no other outlet.

Plenty of people are willing to put a gun to their own heads by not voting for Harris because they want to support people that would gladly kill them, that’s not in question, so why question this?

When people feel like they have no other choice they do interesting things. A lot of people feel that Maryland will remain blue for the Presidency no matter what so they are willing to risk voting for Hogan because he seems sane and he might bring some balance back to Maryland. To many it seems that the state is shifting too far to the left and they have no urge to find themselves living in the next Portland, San Francisco, or Seattle.

"the state is shifting too far to the left" and "AA is too liberal for me" both mean the same thing, and it doesn't have anything to do with the actual politics and policies of Wes Moore or Angela Alsobrooks.

PP acknowledges that may be the case, but notes that the further left actions of others, not on the ballot this cycle, could cause a protest vote to happen, even if it might not be the most rational choice.

I hope you're right, but I think Alsobrooks will barely make it through. It will be a tight race for both Alsobrooks and Mucarsel-Powell in Florida.
